PLAYLIST FOR “GIVE & TAKE WEEK” (10.12.19)

13 Oct

The two words, give and take, are frequently associated with my show, although usually in the form of “Give me a break!” and “I’m going to take a nap.” But this week all of the songs had either the words or the concepts of giving and taking. Plus it was the audience’s turn to get involved because it’s Fall Fundraising week at WMNR, Fine Arts Radio (wmnr.org); so with phone and on-line pledges people put their money where my mouth is, supporting the show and this wonderful anomaly of a radio station. Thanks!

PLAYLIST FOR “I’M IN THE MOOD FOR THE SUBJUNCTIVE” (3.30.19)

30 Mar

In an effort to save an endangered and near extinct treasure – good grammar, I renewed my effort to MGGA – Make Grammar Great Again – and offered a remedial lesson in the subjunctive, that form of grammar that expresses wishes and desires for things we don’t have. Of course, I had a lot of help from some wonderful adjunct songwriters and singers. Wish you’d never heard of the subjunctive mood? Hey, maybe you understand this stuff better than you think.

30 Dec

I spent a couple of hours reflecting on some of the weekly musical themes from the past year and some of my favorite musical discoveries in an attempt – probably a futile one – to distract the audience from reflecting on all of the things they could have been doing instead of listening to my show every week. PLAYLIST FOR “GONE FISHIN'” (6.28.16)

27 Jun

WMNR Fine Arts Radio was celebrating another Musical Theme Week, “Gone Fishin'”. So, of course, I jumped right in, since I’ve spent my life  fishing for the right words and angling for an original thought. Although I came up with just two songs actually about fishing, I found songs about fishing metaphors (see if you can guess which metaphor goes with which songs) and songs about taking off and going traveling in general.

PLAYLIST FOR “THE (LOST) ART OF WRITING LETTERS” (5.14.16)

16 May

Remember when 140 characters meant a Tolstoy novel, not our major means of communicating with each other? Remember when Snail Mail referred to the gender of a specie, not to the U.S. Postal Service? Remember when a sound bite was an accident with the neighbor’s dog, not a statement by a politician? (Although you’d probably be wise to get a rabies shot after both of those events.) We seem to have lost a number of things these days – skills such as logic, empathy, listening. This week I thought I’d tackle the lost art of letter writing with a couple dozen wonderful songs and singers on the topic.
