Next week is my annual Turntable For One Christmas party. It’s that time again. Time for ghost and goblins and ghouls; time for witches, curses, and the walking dead. And that means it’s time for my annual musical tribute to Congress. Whoops – wrong calendar! I mean it’s time for my annual Halloween Party. I play my favorite Halloween songs, and when trick or treaters come to the door, I get to guess who they’re dressed up to be, and then hand out an appropriate song. One of my favorite shows of the year, not just because I get to play some favorite Halloween songs, but because when trick or treaters come to the door, I get to guess who they’re dressed up as. Of course, instead of handing out candy, I play a song that matches their costume. This year, somehow, a cat rang the doorbell, so I played a couple songs in honor of National Cat Day. By the way – and no surprise here – Holly Cole won the prize for the spookiest song. It may not be a Halloween song, but it’s fabulously scary, if you ask me.

I started my Christmas vacation a little early and played the 2020 Christmas program, recorded back when we were all concerned about the pandemic and worried if large gatherings were the smartest way to celebrate the holiday. Hmmm – it seems the more things change…  Here’s the description I wrote about the show last year:

Some traditional holiday favorites, both from the show and around my house; plus a demo of a Christmas song with music composed by my son, Cody, and lyrics written by my wife, Megan. And if that weren’t enough to keep you awake and because no one begged me not to do it, once again I played the worst Christmas song ever written as sung by Robert Goulet. And what Turntable For One Christmas Party would be complete without the annual and traditional heartwarming retelling of the story of how a beloved Christmas song nearly got me expelled from Hebrew school? It’s that time again, time when ghastly, ghostly white apparitions appear. The living dead, their eyes open but unseeing, their mouths moving but they say nothing. I know, I just described the U.S. Senate, but that’s not what the show was about this week. I served up a bobbing bucket full of great ghoulish songs at the annual Turntable for One Halloween party! And, best of all, I got to play my favorite game. When Trick Or Treaters came to the door, I got to guess who they were dressed up to be and give them an appropriate song. What does it take to lose weight? Willpower. Stop biting your nails? Willpower. What does it take to stop watching America’s Got Talent? Half a brain – but that’s a different issue. Getting back on topic: what does it take to give up smoking? Again, Willpower. So let me get this straight: Willpower is forcing yourself not to do something. Wouldn’t it make more sense to call it Won’t-power?  But no – everyone gives Willpower all the praise and approbation. Well, not  this week! I think Won’t is just as important to songwriters as Will – maybe more important. I tried to prove that with songs about Will and Won’t. If i were posting on Instagram or Facebook, I could just post an appropriate photo with one single word, MOOD. That doesn’t work so well on radio, so instead I played songs that captured my mood this week as I watched everything that happened, everything that (thank God) didn’t happen, and indulged in the feeling of a new beginning and new hope.
