PLAYLIST FOR “IT’S RAINING CATS AND…EVEN MORE CATS” (4.9.22)

I wanted to do a special show for a special audience who never choose to listen to the show but listen to the show nearly every week, often sitting in someone’s lap or, more likely, sitting in exactly the chair someone else wants to sit in. So I dedicated the show to all the cats who are probably my furriest and  also my most loyal listeners with songs about cats and songs sung by Cats and Kats. During the show listeners in AZ sent me a photo of their cat, Baxter, listening to my show with them. Baxter is different from most of my audience not because he has whiskers and a tail, but because he’s clearly awake. And I also played a song by another Ukrainian jazz artist because…

He gave us so much wonderful, unforgettable music. Wait, you’re thinking of that Frank? I was thinking of Frank Loesser and I tried to squeeze as many gems in his voluminous songbook from movies, Broadway, and popular song into a couple hours as I could. PLAYLIST FOR “DISINFORMATION WEEK” (3.5.22)

Disinformation. It’s a word we’re hearing frequently these days. Some people call Disinformation propaganda; some people with a straight face call it alternative facts. I call it pernicious lies. So I spent two hours defining and explicating Disinformation; and, most importantly, telling people how to protect themselves from it. JUST KIDDING! You know me. Instead, I spent the two hours exploiting this sensitive issue and squeezing every last drop of irony and rueful laughter from it. But before things got too silly, I started the show with a much-too appropriately titled Ukrainian folk song, recognizing the only thing breaking apart faster than my heart is the world

Double threats. Maybe even triple threats. And no, I’m not talking about my fan mail. I’m talking about people – well, take Hugh Jackman, for example. He acts, he also sings, he can dance, and he can tear your throat out with his Wolverine claws. This week was dedicated to those people blessed with more than one enviable talent. Some of the singers this week write songs or came from other professions. Plus some of the songs come from unexpected sources – Dorothy Parker, Kazuo Ishiguro, even Fred Astaire.
