PLAYLIST FOR “LET’S TALK ABOUT ME” – AN ARCHIVE RE-BROADCAST – (8.8.20)

9 Aug

(I took the week off and found a show from 2018. It was like finding my lost youth and innocence…and some great music. Here are my comments from that other world ago.)

Last night’s show was all about me – no, it’s not what you’re thinking. Check out the song titles and you’ll see that the show was all about “me,” not me. Although since I chose all the songs and all the singers myself, wasn’t the show really all about me? If anyone isn’t utterly confused yet, write to me. I’m sure I can fix that.

PLAYLIST FOR “SEASON FINALE 2019 – SUMMER LISTENING ASSIGNMENTS” (6.29.19)

30 Jun

Turntable For One is on hiatus until August 31st. So, as I always do on the final program, I gave out summer listening assignments for July and August. Plus, as I also always do, I talked about the ice cream treats I’ll be serving on my summer job on a wandering ice cream truck.

On the menu this year: 20 different ice creams in one bowl. Last year I called it the Kitchen Sink sundae; this year: the Democratic debate sundae.

Last year I sold the classic orange sherbet treat, the skyrocket. This year I’m testing something new and explosive: Little Skyrocket Man.

How about a Polar Icecap sundae? (Which is really just a glass of warm water.)

New this year: the Bill Barr Milkshake – you can order it but it will never show up.

I’m trying out a new combination of mint and peach ice creams – I’m hoping peach-mint really catches on this summer.

Don’t forget about The Infrastructure Sundae – a combination of Rocky Road ice cream and crumbled bridge mix.

A green reminder: When you’re done with your ice cream, pass your spoon on to the next customer. (Hey – either you believe in recycling or you don’t!)

PLAYLIST FOR “LOOK WHAT I FOUND IN THE MAILBOX!” (5.25.19)

27 May

Instead of a theme, instead of featuring the oft-heard Turntable For One regulars – Sinatra, Tony, Carmen, Ella, Nina, etc. – I put Saturday’s show together with only some of the new music I received in the mail (both physical and virtual) in just the past two weeks. I generously didn’t go into the other things I find in my mail – things like memorial headstone catalogs and threatening letters from Social Security since they found out that I am neither social nor secure. Also: here’s a shout out to all of the singers and musicians listed below – young and old – and to their promoters; without them my audience and I would just have to stare at each other for two hours, and I think we know who would lose that staring contest.

PLAYLIST FOR “CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY 2019” (4.27.19)

28 Apr

Okay, I know I was celebrating International Jazz Day a little early. But I was eager to feature a few of the singers from around the world who are fighting the good fight to keep jazz alive, thriving, and swinging. I also asked some of my favorites to  record messages introducing a song or singer important and influential to them. Not surprisingly, these wonderful singers all chose American singers as their gold standard. If only that were true here in the country where jazz was born.
