When I started this show, 15 years ago, I promised no bad jokes. That promise went out the window on the first show. Then I promised I’d never play Rod Stewart or Lawrence Welk. 0 for 2 on those. Finally, in desperation, I promised never to try to sell skin care products to my audience. For some reason I seem to be in “get out of Dodge mode” these days. Can’t imagine why. So I played a couple hours of songs about famous addresses, songs with lyrics about famous addresses, and songs recorded at famous addresses. I especially liked playing Steven Pasquale singing the new national anthem of ICE – On The Street Where You Live. All in all, I think I addressed the topic pretty well.

I desperately need a break. I desperately need something to celebrate. I tried to combine the two with a tribute to Spring. But not without first opening the show with another Ukrainian jazz artist. I’m watching the world fall apart but from a distance. Living in Kyiv, Alina’s view is terrifyingly closer. Yet she tells me she and her family are safe and trying to stay positive. PLAYLIST FOR ” A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN” (1.12.19)

Turntable For One is all about problems – certainly not solving them, more like creating them, exacerbating them, and at the very least exploiting them. So this week I tackled the problem of the government shutdown. What did I do? I played music, of course, but I also dedicated the program to the 800,000 federal employees who have gone from figuring out how to live paycheck to paycheck to how to live no paycheck to no paycheck. The President said he didn’t want to call this a shutdown. I agree. How about travesty?
