PLAYLIST FOR “ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARTY 2023” (3.18.23)

19 Mar

March 17th was National Sleep Day – the last holiday in the world I’d like my audience to celebrate. Fortunately, it was also St. Patrick’s Day. That’s more like it. So I presented a mixture of laughter and tears, a perfect combination for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Although, in truth, most of the tears were mine because once again I maintained my tradition of eating a celebratory bowl of Lucky Charms on the air. (Lucky Charms are now gluten-free. It didn’t help.)  Still, it was a grand night of Irish and Irish-American singers and a chance to celebrate the music of Jimmy McHugh.

PLAYLIST FOR “ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARTY” – AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST (3.12.22)

13 Mar

I couldn’t make it to the station this week, but did that mean no St. Patrick’s Day party this year? Nope. I dug this show from 2019 out of the archives. This is what I wrote about the show back then:

It’s been a Turntable For One St. Patrick’s Day tradition for me to play some jazz singers from Ireland, a few Irish-American (or at least half-Irish-American) singers and musicians, and – always a highlight – for me to eat some traditional Irish food on the air – which, of course, means  a bowl of Lucky Charms. And, as if hearing me struggle and choke wasn’t incentive enough, I made this year’s party a celebration of the songs of Jimmy McHugh, the wonderful Irish-American composer.

SONG TITLE  /  Artist  /  CD Or Album Title

  • LOVE WON’T LET YOU GET AWAY  /  Bing Crosby & Rosemary Clooney  /  “Fancy Meeting You Here”
  • IF LOVE WERE ALL /  Judy Garland  /  Judy At Carnegie Hall”
  • SOMETHING COOL  /  Veronica Swift  /  “Lonely Woman”
  • EXACTLY LIKE YOU  /  (Mystery Vocalist)  /  Regis Philbin  /  “When You’re Smiling”
  • I CAN’T GIVE YOU ANYTHING BUT LOVE  /  Five Play  /  “Live From The Firehouse Stage”
  • I MUST HAVE THAT MAN  /  Jackie Ryan  /  “Doozy”
  • I JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT LOVE  /  Nat Cole  /  “Night Lights”
  • ALL ALONE AM I  /  Cassandre McKinley  /  “Dragonfly”
  • THE IRISH BALLAD  /  Tom Lehrer  /  “Revisited”
  • SPRING CAN REALLY HANG YOU UP THE MOST  /  Ella Fitzgerald with Tommy Flanagan Trio  /  “Jazz At The Santa Monica Civic ‘72”
