PLAYLIST FOR “PLAYING NICE” 11.15.25

16 Nov

It started when we were kids, I mean little kids. Our teachers would tell us. Our parents would tell us. Our aunts and uncles, cousins, and sometime even the mail carrier would tell us: Play Nice! (Of course my parents also told me not to lock my little sister in the trunk of our Chevy Impala – but that’s for another show). Playing Nice – it’s a phrase, an admonition, and a concept that’s kind of gone out of fashion these days.  But not while I have this microphone, because for two hours, I just played nice – nice songs by singers and musicians who know how to play nice.

PLAYLIST FOR “NIGHT TIME IS THE RIGHT TIME” 11.11.23

14 Nov

I’ve been having trouble adjusting to Daylight Savings Time going away. They said we’d gain an hour. We did. We gained an extra hour of darkness. My body doesn’t know when to wake up or when to fall asleep – although falling asleep is something I never discuss in front of my audience. PLAYLIST FOR “QUIZ: WHO WROTE THAT – THE GENDER REVEAL EDITION”” (1.14.23)

16 Jan

Who wrote these songs? A man or a woman? Don’t think of this as a test. Think of it as a provocative little quiz. Sure, there are right and wrong answers. Plus, how you answer does reflect how much you know about music; and what unconscious biases you have; and whether you’re a decent human being or a total disgrace. But it wasn’t a test. It also was some of my favorite music.

PLAYLIST FOR “HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY, NAT COLE!” (9.21.19)

21 Sep

Nat Cole would be 100 years old this year if he hadn’t died when he was 45. I suppose I should say something about how his music has lived on or how his legacy has lived on or how he has influenced so many singers and pianists. But, really, I just wanted to play some music I wanted to hear. In other words, it was business as usual at Turntable For One. But I was surprised to find so many tribute albums and pleased to include some from singers in Sweden, Belgium, and Mexico. Also gave a 100th birthday shout-out to George Shearing.
