PLAYLIST FOR “ELLA FITZGERALD CHALLENGES THE WORLD!” (9.24.16)

26 Sep

This week Ella Fitzgerald took on all comers in a head-to-head, well, really a voice-to-voice competition. She sang standards and some surprising duets; she even challenged Sarah Vaughan in a “forgetting the lyrics” competition (Sarah won) and challenged Shirley Horn to a “slow singing” competition (Shirley won). But it was impossible to listen to this show without marveling at Ella’s musicality and her warmth and without feeling fortunate that we had her for so long.

PLAYLIST FOR “DEMENTIA REDUX” AND “IT’S ABOUT TIME” (3.12.16) #jazz #jazzradio #jazzsingers

13 Mar

Everything was clicking along with great songs, great singers, and a very current and topical theme – Dementia – when I seemed to remember suddenly (and conveniently) that I had done this very same theme three weeks ago. I thought it was the perfect example of “form is content.” I also thought someone in the audience might call me out on this “mistake,” but I guess either the audience is just too kind and considerate to criticize me or dementia is more of a problem than I thought. So I quickly switched gears and since it was Daylight Saving Time “Spring Ahead” night, I played an hour of songs about Time
