PLAYLIST FOR “NEW HOLIDAY MUSIC 2021” (12.11.21)

12 Dec

It’s that time of year again. The season of Peace On Earth and Good Will toward Men. How’s that going so far? Not great, I know. Why not? I think this is clearly another example of a supply chain problem. Still, there are some who have tried to spread holiday spirit undaunted by pandemics and politics and vaccination vexations. I mean  the singers, songwriters, and musicians who created a ton of new holiday CDs and music. They were the stars this week.

PLAYLIST FOR “LYRICS CAME LATER” (11.20.21)

21 Nov

In the beginning was the Word. Okay, fine. But not this week. Not on this show. Almost everything I played started out as an instrumental and the lyrics came later. To bring things back to reality, I ended with a melody played so beautifully that I don’t think it really needed the lyrics added later and, finally, with a lyric that Johnny Mercer wrote but didn’t live long enough to set to music.

PLAYLIST FOR “HALLOWEEN PARTY 2021”

1 Nov

It’s that time again, time when ghastly, ghostly white apparitions appear. The living dead, their eyes open but unseeing, their mouths moving but they say nothing. I know, I just described the U.S. Senate, but that’s not what the show was about this week. I served up a bobbing bucket full of great ghoulish songs at the annual Turntable for One Halloween party! And, best of all, I got to play my favorite game. When Trick Or Treaters came to the door, I got to guess who they were dressed up to be and give them an appropriate song. PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO THE TELEPHONE” (9.25.21)

26 Sep

This was the week of WMNR’s Fall Fundraising Drive and many of the broadcasters and staff took to the airwaves to ask, cajole, exhort, plead, beg for listeners to call in to make a pledge. I tried to be a little more laid back, subtle, and subliminal, playing songs with telephone in the title or lyrics. Plus I also asked, cajoled, exhorted, etc., etc. to make a few buck for the station. Wondering what Just In Time and The Party’s Over has to do with the telephone? I refer you to the synopsis of Bells Are Ringing.
