PLAYLIST FOR “THE SONG IS YOU” (11.8.14)

8 Nov

I’ve played songs that compare people to ghosts, dogs, cats, gypsies, tramps, and thieves, mysteries, and more. You know what I haven’t played? What’s that? Songs that compare people to pastrami sandwiches or garages or stucco or a slow death by viper venom? Ok, fine, you’re right. Now do you want to hear my answer? Songs that compare people to songs! If you can come up with an hour of songs comparing people to stucco, let me know, but until then, check these songs out.

PLAYLIST FOR “TEACHING OLD DOGS NEW TRICKS?” (9.27.14)

28 Sep

I know that you depend on Turntable For One to come up with easy answers to hard questions, the questions no one is asking (probably for lack of interest). And I don’t think the show has ever failed you, at least, not on that score. So last night, I challenged the old saw, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” Of course, the easy way to prove or disprove this would have been to bring an old dog into the studio and spend my hour of air time trying to teach it a new trick. However I scoff at the easy way, I eschew the conventional, and, so, instead, I played an hour of songs or singers related to the topic. The results may not have been conclusive, but they sure were swinging.

It’s also almost Toots Thielemans’ 92nd birthday. He decided recently to retire, so I especially wanted to celebrate his birthday, his long career, and his music which always came straight from his heart into his harmonica. Thanks, Toots!

PLAYLIST FOR “GHOSTS AND GOBLINS AND WITCHES AND SPELLS” (10.27.12)

29 Oct

Don’t you love Halloween traditions? Like songs about ghosts and witches and spells; and hurricanes that change the geography of the East Coast and turn off the electricity for at least a week. I prefer the tradition of killing people with a tossed handful of flour rather than with hurricanes. Let’s cancel this modern-day tradition for next year, okay?

Don’t know for certain if there will be a live show this coming Saturday. Watch this space for updates.

And while you’re here, click on Thanksgiving Show to see if you’d like to make a musical contribution to the show.
