PLAYLIST FOR “DEBATE NIGHT” (10.1.16)

3 Oct

I started the show with an hour of songs about debates, candidates, and politics. What was I thinking? So half-way through, realizing people want to get away from the cacophony and chaos, I played an hour of music to steer attention away and calm the soul from all the madness.

PLAYLIST FOR “ELLA FITZGERALD CHALLENGES THE WORLD!” (9.24.16)

26 Sep

This week Ella Fitzgerald took on all comers in a head-to-head, well, really a voice-to-voice competition. She sang standards and some surprising duets; she even challenged Sarah Vaughan in a “forgetting the lyrics” competition (Sarah won) and challenged Shirley Horn to a “slow singing” competition (Shirley won). But it was impossible to listen to this show without marveling at Ella’s musicality and her warmth and without feeling fortunate that we had her for so long.

PLAYLIST FOR “SONGS ABOUT SONGS” (9.17.16)

17 Sep

Over the last 7 years, I’ve thought of musical themes of songs for about nearly everything you can think of. Hope you caught my shows on songs about Boy Meets Tinder, Practical First Aid, and The Only Thing The NSA Isn’t Watching Is Paint Drying. This week was more about the music than my paranoia.  I’m content.

HINT:

Ah, election season – the debates, the discussions, the arguments, the choices, the recriminations, and the remorse – and that’s just at your family Thanksgiving dinner. How do we get through all this? How do we cope, how do we stay safe and sane? Put down that bottle. I have a better idea. And if you’re truly mindful, you probably can guess what I mean.

HINT FOR THIS WEEK’S MUSICAL THEME (9.3.16)

31 Aug

HINT:

Turntable For One is back this Saturday night for its seventh season. What will I do for a “lucky number seven” musical theme? Seven dwarfs? Seven wonders of the world? Seven continents? The Magnificent Seven? Think of a number between 1 and 7 and make the audience guess? No, I’ve got a better idea!

PLAYLIST FOR “SUMMER LISTENING ASSIGNMENTS – SEASON FINALE” (7.2.16)

9 Jul

I’m posting this a week late. Computer troubles. Saturday (July 2nd) was my final show of the season so, following tradition, I handed out summer listening assignments, music you should be listening to while Turntable For One is on its summer vacation. I’ll be off the air for 8 weeks, but from time to time I’ll let you know some of the music I’m listening to this summer. Leave a comment and let me know what’s keeping your ears busy, besides the general din of iniquity. I’ll be back on the air September 10th.
