PLAYLIST FOR “EITHER/OR” (11.21.15) #jazz #jazzradio #jazzsingers

22 Nov

Each week when I’m putting together a show, I have to decide between so many choices – either a new singer or a classic one; either a familiar song or something more recent; and, most important of all, either libel or slander.  This week I decided to let the singers wrestle with their own Either/Or decisions. Why should I have to do all the work?

28 Jun

Even though I’ll be on a 7-week hiatus (while WMNR broadcasts live concerts from Tanglewood by the Boston Symphony Orchestra), I couldn’t go without leaving you my recommendations for great new music and great old music so that your can work on your ears while you work on your tan this summer. So, whether you’re lying on the beach, lying in bed, or lying on the campaign trail, here are a few parting suggestions for your summer listening pleasure.

I’ll be back in the Fall, but drop by here frequently because I’ll be talking about music I’m listening to while I’m on my vacation. I’d also love to hear what music you’re listening to, so leave a comment.

PLAYLIST FOR “POLITICALLY INCORRECT!” (3.21.15) #jazz #jazzradio #jazz vocals

22 Mar

How to celebrate March as National Women’s Month? I had two choices. Choice A: Play a whole song by a male singer and then play a woman singing 77% of her song. Choice B: Demonstrate how far we’ve come by ironically playing a dozen politically incorrect songs which maybe still hit the mark musically, but certainly miss the point of the celebration by a mile. Of course, I pretended to chose B. In truth I don’t find any of these songs, except maybe the Godfrey song, to be politically incorrect, but period pieces and some favorite songs I’ve enjoyed for years.

PLAYLIST FOR “BREAKING THE RECORD” (2.28.15) – AN ARCHIVE REPLAY #jazz #jazzradio #jazzsingers

1 Mar

Couldn’t do a live show last night, so I pulled from the Turntable For One archives a program I consider one of my proudest moments (you’ll notice I didn’t solicit anyone else’s opinion about that).  On this show, Turntable For One bravely went where no other radio program has tried to go. (What do they know that I don’t and when will I ever learn?) Nevertheless, throwing caution and good sense to the wind (if not good taste as well), I challenged the record for the most number of songs ever played during a Turntable For One show; and, including references from accompanists, I played 31 songs in one hour, a record I think will stand, especially on a crowded bus. But, you be the judge! Take a look at the playlist. I’d say the music was a Win-Win for me and everyone else.

PLAYLIST FOR “BREAKING THE RECORD” (3.22.14)

22 Mar

Once again Turntable For One goes where no other radio program has tried to go. (What do they know that I don’t and when will I ever learn?) I challenged the record for the most number of songs played during the show and, including references from the accompanists, I played 30 in one hour, a record I think will stand for a while – certainly a lot longer than the Duke basketball team. But take a look at the playlist. I’d say the music was a Win-Win for me and everyone else.

PLAYLIST FOR “LOVE AND MARRIAGE…AND MUSIC” (2.1.14)

1 Feb

Every week I try to play some of the best marriages of words and music, singer and arranger, what’s written on the sheet music and what’s created in a singer’s mind. This week I also focussed on singers and musicians who are married in a more literal way. Whether they sing together, sing and play, sing and arrange, just about everyone I played is also husband and wife. And by including Mickey Rooney and his 8th wife, I was also able to reinforce the precept that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it
