PLAYLIST FOR “MANNERS MATTER” 11.18.23

19 Nov

What on earth is going on?  Punching in the house of representatives.  Senators challenging witnesses to fight.  Road rage.  Parking lot rage; grocery store rage. What’s next? Library rage?  People: What are you thinking?  What do you need?  Maybe lessons in good manners?  Okay.  We can do that – because this week on Turntable For One, Manners Matter.  Good manners teach us how to dress, what to say (and not say), how to be courteous and kind. Plus I threw in a few bad manners just for contrast. Well, don’t say I didn’t try.

7 Nov

It’s a small word, only two letters. But it’s aspirational, inspirational, and conditional, opening a thought or a wish to thousand possibilities.  So in another (likely futile) attempt to Make Grammar Great Again, I presented a musical tribute to the conditional  conjunction – IF.

PLAYLIST FOR “HEY – THAT SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN!” (5.20.23)

24 May

What do these 3 things have in common: building a house at the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean,  launching a nuclear attack – you pick the target, transporting Prince Harry and Meghan from a New York City event to their hotel three blocks away. No, they’re not on my bucket list. Correct answer: They all take Planning! And you know what else takes planning – this show!  Stop laughing. To prove how completely, thoroughly this show is planned, I chose for a musical theme: Hey – That sounds like a plan. PLAYLIST FOR “EASY DOES IT” (3.4.23)

5 Mar

You know how I work very hard planning this show every week? Some of my audience was  thinking,”Work harder.”  And some were thinking, “This show is planned?”  And the rest of them were likely thinking, “Will you get through the opening so we can listen to some music?”  The point was this week instead of working hard, I took it easy. PLAYLIST FOR “QUIZ: WHO WROTE THAT – THE GENDER REVEAL EDITION”” (1.14.23)

16 Jan

Who wrote these songs? A man or a woman? Don’t think of this as a test. Think of it as a provocative little quiz. Sure, there are right and wrong answers. Plus, how you answer does reflect how much you know about music; and what unconscious biases you have; and whether you’re a decent human being or a total disgrace. But it wasn’t a test. It also was some of my favorite music.

PLAYLIST FOR “AN EXERCISE IN EXERCISING” (AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST (11.5.22)

6 Nov

Couldn’t do a live show this week, so I decided to take a stroll down memory lane, a shorter and shorter trip for me. Look what I found! A show from last Spring. Here’s what I wrote about the show at the time…

Until recently my exercise regimen consisted of Running my mouth, Stretching the truth; Rushing to judgment; and Leaping to all the wrong conclusions. Those days are gone. Now I have a Life Coach telling me when to sleep, when to wake up, when to stand, and how far to walk and on and on. And there’s no way I can tell this Life Coach to put a cork in it because my Life Coach isn’t a person – it’s an Apple Watch that’s become the boss of me. So if I have to endure this torture, of course, my audience had to endure the torture with two-hours of songs about exercise. I’d write more but my damned watch is telling me it’s time to stand!

PLAYLIST FOR “AN EVENING WITH FRANK” (AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST) (10.8.22)

9 Oct

Couldn’t do a live show this week, so I led my audience on a trip down memory lane…which, admittedly, is becoming a shorter and shorter trip for me. Here’s what I wrote when the show was first broadcast.

He gave us so much wonderful, unforgettable music. Wait, you’re thinking of that Frank? I was thinking of Frank Loesser and I tried to squeeze as many gems in his voluminous songbook from movies, Broadway, and popular song into a couple hours as I could. But before the Evening With Frank began, I opened the show again with another song from a young Ukrainian jazz singer who remains (as of this posting) safe and even hopeful in Kyiv.
