PLAYLIST FOR “OSCAR LOSERS…AND A FEW WINNERS” (2.25.17)

27 Feb

Most of these songs are losers, Oscar losers, that is.  (Though none of the singers and musicians are.) In addition to paying tribute to the Oscar nominated songs, I also took time out to pay tribute to Sweden and Swedish jazz singers in their time of tears and trial following the terrorist attacks that so surprised, if not stunned, us all when we heard about them.

It’s true that smiling requires more muscles than frowning, which must be why smiling always tires me so quickly. Still, considering all that we know and fear about the world today, I thought it was worth spending a couple hours focusing on laughing and smiling. PLAYLIST FOR “THE (LOST) ART OF WRITING LETTERS” (5.14.16)

16 May

Remember when 140 characters meant a Tolstoy novel, not our major means of communicating with each other? Remember when Snail Mail referred to the gender of a specie, not to the U.S. Postal Service? Remember when a sound bite was an accident with the neighbor’s dog, not a statement by a politician? (Although you’d probably be wise to get a rabies shot after both of those events.) We seem to have lost a number of things these days – skills such as logic, empathy, listening. This week I thought I’d tackle the lost art of letter writing with a couple dozen wonderful songs and singers on the topic.

  • TAKE A LETTER, MISS JONES  /  Mel Torme  /  “Live At Marty’s”
  • LOVE LETTERS  /  Natalie Cole  /  “Stardust”
  • I’M GONNA SIT RIGHT DOWN AND WRITE MYSELF A LETTER  /  Frank Sinatra  /  “Sinatra/Basie: The Complete Reprise Studio Recordings”

  • FAMOUS BLUE RAINCOAT  /  Leonard Cohen  /  “The Essential Leonard Cohen”
  • DEAR BIX  / Renee Yoxon & Chad Linsley  /  “Impossible: Live At Musideum”
  • TONY BENNETT  /  Kevin Mahogany  /  “Old, New, Borrowed, And The Blues”
  • TOO MARVELOUS FOR WORDS  /  Helen Merrill  /  “Casa Forte”
  • YOU’RE THE TOP  /  (Mystery Vocalist)  /  Cary Grant & Ginny Sims  /  “Music of Cole Porter”

SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN

What’s the difference between a Dream and a Plan? Well, I’ve been having a lot of bad dreams lately, a lot of bad plans, too. Dreams aren’t real and they don’t come true…of course, most of my plans don’t come true, either. You know, maybe there’s no difference at all. Both of them end in disappointment and heartache – but not when singers like the ones I played are singing about plans they’re making!

PLAYLIST FOR “NO ANSWERS, ONLY QUESTIONS!” (3.5.16) #jazz #jazzradio #jazzsingers

6 Mar

I thought we could all use a two-hour break from the endless diarrhetic diatribes of easy answers and dichotomous thinking. Not all questions can be answered in a beat-the-buzzer 90-seconds. In fact, some of the swinging questions I played took more than five minutes just to ask.

PLAYLIST FOR “TWO SHOWS FROM THE ARCHIVE” (2.27.16) #jazz #jazzradio #jazzsingers

27 Feb

I played two shows from the archive while I took a Saturday off to gather my thoughts. I should have brought a leaf rake. First up was “All Talk Radio!” a show from last fall after an exciting two weeks at Pundit Training Camp where I learned the valuable lessons all pundits and news commentators know, such as: it’s not what you have to say, but how long it takes you to say it. Oh, I could have talked on and on and on and on about this, but I filled up most of the hour with some great songs about talking.

SONG TITLE  /  Artist  /  CD Or Album Title

  • HAPPY TALK  /  Nancy Wilson & Cannonball Adderley/  “Nancy Wilson & Cannonball Adderley”
  • TALK TO ME, TALK TO ME  /   Freddie Cole  /  “Talk To Me”

  • CAN WE TALK  /  Ben Sidran  /  “Don’t Cry For No Hipster”
  • EVERYBODY’S TALKIN’ AT ME  /  Donna Lewis  /  “Brand New Day”
  • I DON’T WANT TO HEAR IT ANYMORE  /  Mark Jennett  /  “The Way I Am”
  • WORDS  /  The Real Group  /  “Live In Japan”

The second show, “The Complaint Department,” first aired 3 years ago. The only complaint I want to hear after the show is from your neighbors because you were playing the music too loud.

SONG TITLE  /  Artist  /  CD or Album Title

  • BUT NOT FOR ME  /  Gladys Knight  /  “Before Me”
  • HOW COULD YOU DO A THING LIKE THAT  /  Frank Sinatra  /  “Come Swing With Me”
  • RAIN JUST RAIN  /  Rigmor Gustafsson Quintet  /  “In The Light Of Day”
  • I WISH I DIDN’T LOVE YOU SO  /  Steven Pasquale  /  “Somethin’ Like Love”
  • KISSING BUG  /  Hetty Kate  /  “Kissing Bug”
  • YOU’RE TALKING TOO LOUD  /  Dave Tull  /  “I Just Want To Get Paid”
  • TELEPHONE SONG  /  Stan Getz & Astrud  Gilberto  /  “The Girl From Ipanema”
  • WHININ’ BOY BLUES  /  (Mystery Vocalist)  /  Hugh Laurie  /  “Let Them Talk”
