I reached back into the Turntable For One archives and dusted off golden oldie and one of my favorites from the past few years. This is what I wrote when the show was new:

In the middle of planning this week’s show – A Musical Tribute To The  Venn Diagram – I was forced to face a defining question: What makes Turntable For One Turntable For One? PLAYLIST FOR “FUN WITH PHOBIAS” (6.4.22)

We all have them. Maybe we call them quirks or superstitions. Let’s call them by their real names – fears and phobias. Fear of Heights – it’s called Acrophobia.  Dentrophobia – fear of Dentists. Even I have a phobia: The Fear of Howie Mandel suddenly showing up at my door. I’m sure there’s a name of that but I haven’t found it yet. Most of our phobias are manageable and many are actually curable. Here’s my question: are they exploitable, by which I mean could I get two hours of music out of them? Songs about phobias, songs to help overcome phobias – two hours of immersion therapy in swing.

This was my first Fourth Of July show ever (I’m usually off during July and August). So should the show be patriotic? Ironic? Serious? Cynical? Yes, yes, yes, and yes! I celebrated with some traditional songs, plus the Buddy Rich Big Band for fireworks, Laverne Butler with a declaration of independence, tributes to Freddy Cole, Johnny Mandel, and Jim Pepper, and  songs by Dave Frishberg, Randy Newman in celebration of the First Amendment.
