I started the show with an hour of songs about debates, candidates, and politics. What was I thinking? So half-way through, realizing people want to get away from the cacophony and chaos, I played an hour of music to steer attention away and calm the soul from all the madness.

PLAYLIST FOR “ELLA FITZGERALD CHALLENGES THE WORLD!” (9.24.16)

26 Sep

This week Ella Fitzgerald took on all comers in a head-to-head, well, really a voice-to-voice competition. She sang standards and some surprising duets; she even challenged Sarah Vaughan in a “forgetting the lyrics” competition (Sarah won) and challenged Shirley Horn to a “slow singing” competition (Shirley won). But it was impossible to listen to this show without marveling at Ella’s musicality and her warmth and without feeling fortunate that we had her for so long.

PLAYLIST FOR “SONGS ABOUT SONGS” (9.17.16)

17 Sep

Over the last 7 years, I’ve thought of musical themes of songs for about nearly everything you can think of. Hope you caught my shows on songs about Boy Meets Tinder, Practical First Aid, and The Only Thing The NSA Isn’t Watching Is Paint Drying. This week was more about the music than my paranoia.  I’m content.
