PLAYLIST FOR “SARCASM OR NOT SARCASM: A TURNTABLE FOR ONE QUIZ” (5.2.20)

3 May

In times of trouble, people turn to Turntable For One for answers. Yes, it’s inexplicable to me, too. For instance…

Dear Turntable For One – I hear there is light at the end of the tunnel. Should I insert that light into my body.     TFO: No – wrong tunnel.

Dear Turntable For One – Can I mix Mountain Dew and Clorox?     TFO: If you’re drinking Mountain Dew, you don’t need the Clorox.

Dear Turntable For One – How can I tell if a politician is really making a sarcastic joke and not just saying something idiotic?   TFO:  Sarcastic jokes and politicians don’t usually go together. But we’ve been hearing a lot about sarcastic jokes in the White House lately. Time for a refresher course on recognizing true sarcasm when you hear it.

(Warning: The quiz included some trick questions.)

PLAYLIST FOR “IN YOUR DREAMS” (4.25.20)

26 Apr

Anybody else having bad dreams these nights? So, I’ve not been getting much sleep, but I did get a theme for this week’s show – songs about dreams and a few songs about things to dream about. Also I gave a special shout-out to Georgia for opening up its beauty salons, bowling alleys, restaurants, and tattoo parlors. I celebrated the occasion with a special Turntable For One contest: What should the tattoo say on the first person to get a new tattoo in GA. My suggestion? Do Not Resuscitate.

PLAYLIST FOR “IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU” (4.18.20)

19 Apr

Week after week after week, for the last ten years, this show has been about three things: me, myself, and I. Sure, I’ve talked now and then about the audience and me being a team – but I’ve recently been reminded that there’s no “I” in team. And you can’t spell Turntable without “U”. So this week all of the music was dedicated and focussed on YOU. I figure after sucking up to the audience for two hours in ten years, things can get back to normal next week.

PLAYLIST FOR “LET’S GO CLUBBING” (4.11.20)

12 Apr

While everyone’s sheltering in place or self-quarantining, there are two ways to look at this week’s show featuring all live performances from jazz clubs and venues around the world: either I’m trying to make people feel bad because of all the night life we’re missing OR I’m trying to give people hope for what’s to come after this damned pandemic has run at least its first course. Which is it? You be the judge. I just had fun playing some of my favorite singers in front of a band, behind a microphone, in front of an audience.

Doesn’t seem like there’s much to celebrate these days. But the grass is greening; trees are budding, and flowers are popping out of the ground. That means it’s time for my annual show with the musical theme, Seasonal Allergies. However, instead I chose something more positive. True, I did slip in some wonderfully grumpy Spring songs. PLAYLIST FOR “SOCIAL DISTANCING” (3.21.20)

22 Mar

At times like these – perilous times, uncertain times – people turn to Turntable For One for information and advice. Clearly these are people who’ve never listened to the show before. But, okay, I can totally pretend to abandon my usual format and inveterate cynicism to talk about something serious. Social Distancing. What is it? How do I do it? And what can I do while I’m doing it? I think these songs demonstrate some of the actions and attitudes people should adopt to fill the long months ahead. I also threw in Stacey Kent and Rachael & Vilray to remind people of what we won’t be able to do, perhaps for a long, long time. A little salt never really hurts a wound, does it?

PLAYLIST FOR “JUST JOE” (3.07.20)

8 Mar

I planned this show months and months ago, just a show featuring some of my favorite songs, singers, and musicians all named Joe. At the time I thought Joe Biden was toast, not someone voters months later would be toasting. Okay, times are different now, but no way I’m throwing away a good idea – especially since they are coming with less and less frequency. I thought when you experience a Teachable Moment, you’re supposed to reflect and even have a change of heart. PLAYLIST FOR “PLENTY OF MONEY AND YOU” (1.25.20)

27 Jan

This week, WMNR is holding its Winter Fundraising Drive and so in my usual subtle and surreptitious way, I offered songs with the subliminal theme of the cleansing benefits of giving your money away.
