Still under the weather and will have to defer the “Game Night” show until next Saturday night. So we heard a show from the archive on Saturday. This is what I said about the show at the time…

I was metaphorically under the weather this week, 24 hours before most of the country was literally under the weather. So I dipped into the archives for a show from a few months back. It may be more relevant to my mood now than it was when it first aired. This is what I wrote about it back then:

When I started this show, 15 years ago, I promised no bad jokes. That promise went out the window on the first show. Then I promised I’d never play Rod Stewart or Lawrence Welk.  0 for 2 on those.  Finally, in desperation, I promised never to try to sell  skin care products to my audience. Everyone loved Orange Is The New Black. You know what we didn’t love? Orange Is The New Blue when huge, thick, toxic orange clouds of smoke from Canadian forest fires enveloped our cities, giving new meaning to huddled masses yearning to breathe free. Thanks, Canada. As if sending us Celine Dion wasn’t bad enough. I knew I had to do something sensitive and sympathetic for the millions of people who suffered this week. But instead I chose to exploit this tragedy to get some ironic laughs with tunes from the Climate Change Hit Parade.

Let’s be honest. France has seen some dark days. Some examples: Joan of Arc?  Where was Gloria Allred when we needed her? And you can’t talk about  dark days without Napoleon — the man not the dessert.  Or Vichy – the government, not the water.  And Freedom Fries – wait, no, that was our dumb mistake. And today the French are suffering through another tragic indignity – raising the national retirement age from 62 to 64. Well. I think we need to show our support and not just our incredulity for what the brave but – not over-worked -people of France going through. I presented a celebration of French singers and musicians, french songs, and songs about France. That’s right, for two hours I gave out out French Kisses this week on Turntable For One.

Sure, I promised my audience a special April 1st show with a new recording of Rod Stewart singing “Nessun Dorma,” a YouTube video of The Boy’s Choir of Galway Cathedral singing in Gaelic, “99 Bottles Of Beer On The Wall,” plus a bootleg from a Joni Mitchell recording session where Joni is aiming a profanity-lace rant at her assistant who gave her the wrong bottle of spring water. Okay, that stuff I couldn’t deliver. But a couple hours of songs about fools and foolishness was a foolproof formula for a great April Fools Day show.
