PLAYLIST FOR ” A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO ANACHRONISMS” 3.14.26

15 Mar

Anachronisms – things that no longer fit the times we live in. And for once I wasn’t the only thing that belonged in that category. Included were also a few songs about things I fear are becoming outdated, things like Democracy, privacy, and kindness.  I also indulged in a cautionary rant about A.I. after discovering a song called Five Cents A Dance that wasn’t the Larry Hart song, was sung by (what I believe is) an A.I. generated version of Kat Edmonson’s unique voice, on an album by someone named Miles LaRoque who put out a dozen album all in 2025!? Deep fakes can sometimes be funny, but real artist are being hurt by people ripping off their talents and this both angers and frightens me.

PLAYLIST FOR “THE BIG QUESTIONS OF LIFE” (9.10.22)

11 Sep

I usually give my email during the show and when I get email, it’s usually people asking questions. Some of the questions….well…”Dear Turntable For One – How Deep is The Ocean? Why don’t you jump in and report back.” You’ll be happy to know that person had his radio taken away from him. Think twice about messing with a radio host. But most of questions I get are important questions because people want me to give them important answers. You gotta be kidding!  This week I told the audience I vouchsafe, promise and swear no answers at all. It was my turn to ask the big questions of Life!

PLAYLIST FOR “LIGHTBULB MOMENTS” (11.13.21)

15 Nov

They don’t happen often and they don’t happen to everyone. But if one does happen to you, it could change your life. Of course I’m talking about an IRS audit. Of course I’m not talking about an IRS audit. I’m talking about those out-of-the-blue, eye opening moments of inspiration or maybe self-discovery. One thing: they’re always moments of clarity. I don’t know what you call them: Serendipity? Intuition? Divine Intervention? Years and years of therapy? I called them something else this week. I called them Lightbulb Moments because that’s how I could get two-hours of music out of them – tossing in a few personal lightbulb moments that changed my own musical life.

PLAYLIST FOR A SALUTE TO DADS – AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST (6.19.21)

20 Jun

I started my Father’s Day celebrating early and didn’t do a live show. Instead, I pulled last year’s Dad’s Day show from the archive. This is what I said about the show a year ago:

My annual salute to Dads with songs about dads, songs sung and written by dads, songs I think dads would/should sing, songs of fatherly advice, some songs I gave myself just as a Father’s Day present, plus a couple stories about my dad and about being a dad myself. In short, another wonderfully self-indulgent show. I am content.

PLAYLIST FOR “11TH ANNUAL MUSIC TO BE THANKFUL FOR” (11.28.20)

29 Nov

Definitely one of my favorite shows every year because it gives me a chance to highlight music I’m thankful for and invite other WMNR broadcasters (B) and some of my favorite singers (S) to talk about and introduce music that’s important to them. Plus, because this show always falls near my birthday, it’s also “family night” at Turntable For One. So my wife and son join me at the radio station to offer their banter and musical selections. This year was different. My wife, Megan, was in the studio with me; our son, Cody, whom we saw at Thanksgiving via FaceTime (just like so many families this year), reported in from the safety of his NYC apartment. Stay well. Stay safe. Everyone.

PLAYLIST FOR “LET’S GO CLUBBING” (AN ARCHIVE RE-BROADCAST) (10.17.20)

18 Oct

This is a re-broadcast of a show from last April, a simpler time when I couldn’t imagine that 8 months later things could be so much worse and heartache and loss could be so preponderant. This is how I introduced the playlist back then:

While everyone’s sheltering in place or self-quarantining, there are two ways to look at this week’s show featuring all live performances from jazz clubs and venues around the world: either I’m trying to make people feel bad because of all the night life we’re missing OR I’m trying to give people hope for what’s to come after this damned pandemic has run at least its first course. Which is it? You be the judge. I just had fun playing some of my favorite singers in front of a band, behind a microphone, in front of an audience.

I think one of the responsibilities of having a microphone every week is knowing when to shut up. I did that (for the most part) this week and let singers and songwriters who for so many years have seen and heard with perception and then written with eloquent honesty about this painful struggle playing out once again across America.

PLAYLIST FOR “THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS” (2.1.20)

3 Feb

I’ve tried for months to do this theme, but something horrible would happen – in a mall, or a night club, or, dear God, another school. So, of course, out of decency I deferred. Besides, after a tragedy, that time is always reserved for politicians to offer their “thoughts and prayers” in lieu of doing anything. I thought I was safe this week, maybe because it was the night before the Super Bowl, or the night before Groundhog Day, or maybe because America really needs a hug this week, I offered some songs about thoughts and prayers.
