PLAYLIST FOR “HOW DO YOU KEEP THE MUSIC PLAYING?” (SPRING FUNDRAISING SHOW) 4.26.25

29 Apr

I’ve always described Turntable For One as a conversation -although I do most of the talking.  But not tonight.  Tonight the most important voice was my audience.  I know, they just came for the music.  I had that covered because this week the songs were all about how do you keep the music playing on Turntable For One. PLAYLIST FOR “A LITTLE LOVE TO UNLOVED LYRICISTS” 12.7.24

9 Dec

I don’t think a week has gone by when I haven’t played songs with lyrics by Larry Hart or Cole Porter or the Bergmans, or Ira Gershwin – until this week! I’m gave all those guys the night off and instead, focussed on lyricists whose songs we know – but their names… not so much. I spent the evening singing the praises of  such talented lyricists as Bob Russell, Caroll Coates, Bob Haymes, Peggy Lee, Ed Hayman, and others. Well, fortunately for my audience, I let other, more qualified people do the singing.

PLAYLIST FOR “TESTING POSITIVE” (1.7.23)

8 Jan

All my life people have been telling me, You’re so negative? Why don’t you try to be more positive. Well, for the past month I have been positive – and I’ve been miserable!  Because I have been testing positive on one damned Covid test after another. Those tests have been the most depressing tests I’ve taken since the Myers-Briggs Personality test. But, finally, after a month, I was back, testing negative – and that’s good, right?  But that’s not the way things are supposed to be. Being Negative – that’s not good.  It’s bad. Being positive?  That’s good.  I’m very confused. So I brought a bunch of songs to see which ones Test Positive – in a good way ! -and it was good to be back at my Turntable For One.

PLAYLIST FOR “AN EVENING WITH FRANK” (AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST) (10.8.22)

9 Oct

Couldn’t do a live show this week, so I led my audience on a trip down memory lane…which, admittedly, is becoming a shorter and shorter trip for me. Here’s what I wrote when the show was first broadcast.

He gave us so much wonderful, unforgettable music. Wait, you’re thinking of that Frank? I was thinking of Frank Loesser and I tried to squeeze as many gems in his voluminous songbook from movies, Broadway, and popular song into a couple hours as I could. I desperately need a break. I desperately need something to celebrate. I tried to combine the two with a tribute to Spring. But not without first opening the show with another Ukrainian jazz artist. PLAYLIST FOR “DOUBLE THREATS, TRIPLE THREATS, & MORE” (2.26.22)

27 Feb

Double threats. Maybe even triple threats. And no, I’m not talking about my fan mail. I’m talking about people – well, take Hugh Jackman, for example. He acts, he also sings, he can dance, and he can tear your throat out with his Wolverine claws. This week was dedicated to those people blessed with more than one enviable talent. Some of the singers this week write songs or came from other professions. Plus some of the songs come from unexpected sources – Dorothy Parker, Kazuo Ishiguro, even Fred Astaire. Gotta say I am in awe of these multi-talented people, especially since I had to give up chewing gum a few years back.
