PLAYLIST FOR “HEARTFELT, HEARTLESS, & HEARTBROKEN: SONGS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY (2.13.16) #jazzradio

14 Feb

In last Wednesday’s hint, I asked what was the only thing I haven’t been called during the 5 1/2 year run of Turntable For One. Thanks for all of the suggestions (most of which were unprintable). Of course, calling me these things immediately disqualifies your answer from the quiz. The answer I was thinking of was “all heart.” And as you peruse the playlist, I think you’ll see that I’ve rectified that situation. PLAYLIST FOR “MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO THE SUBJUNCTIVE MOOD” (5.23.15) #jazz #jazzradio #jazzsingers

24 May

In my obsessive effort to defend correct grammar, I focussed this week on my favorite verb mood, the subjunctive mood; my favorite because it often expresses wishes – even though they’re wishes which haven’t or can’t come true. It’s all a part of my “No listener left behind” effort. Don’t try to thank me. Just doing my job. (Ok, you can try to thank me.)

PLAYLIST FOR “BREAKING THE RECORD” (2.28.15) – AN ARCHIVE REPLAY #jazz #jazzradio #jazzsingers

1 Mar

Couldn’t do a live show last night, so I pulled from the Turntable For One archives a program I consider one of my proudest moments (you’ll notice I didn’t solicit anyone else’s opinion about that).  On this show, Turntable For One bravely went where no other radio program has tried to go. (What do they know that I don’t and when will I ever learn?) Nevertheless, throwing caution and good sense to the wind (if not good taste as well), I challenged the record for the most number of songs ever played during a Turntable For One show; and, including references from accompanists, I played 31 songs in one hour, a record I think will stand, especially on a crowded bus. But, you be the judge! Take a look at the playlist. I’d say the music was a Win-Win for me and everyone else.

PLAYLIST FOR “THE SONG IS YOU” (11.8.14)

8 Nov

I’ve played songs that compare people to ghosts, dogs, cats, gypsies, tramps, and thieves, mysteries, and more. You know what I haven’t played? What’s that? If you can come up with an hour of songs comparing people to stucco, let me know, but until then, check these songs out.

PLAYLIST FOR “COULDA, WOULDA, SHOULDA” (8.30.14)

30 Aug

Summer is over which means time to put away put away your whites, your shorts, your suntan lotion, and reflect on the things we did last summer that we’ll remember all winter long — except I had one of those “Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda” summers when I didn’t do any of the things I wanted and meant to do. Am I bitter? No more than usual. Am I depressed? (See previous response.) Because I have developed the useful skill of turning my pain in art…well, actually, other people do all the art. So are some of my favorite “Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda” songs by some of the best new and old jazz singers. Check back on Wednesday for a hint about next Saturday night’s show.
