PLAYLIST FOR “FAMILY MATTERS” (8.29.20)

30 Aug

I kept the singers and musicians all in the family this week. Everyone was someone’s father, mother, son, daughter, brother, or sister of someone who also made music. Maybe I should have gotten “23 And Me” to sponsor the show.

PLAYLIST FOR “LET’S TALK ABOUT ME” – AN ARCHIVE RE-BROADCAST – (8.8.20)

9 Aug

(I took the week off and found a show from 2018. It was like finding my lost youth and innocence…and some great music. Here are my comments from that other world ago.)

Last night’s show was all about me – no, it’s not what you’re thinking. Check out the song titles and you’ll see that the show was all about “me,” not me. Although since I chose all the songs and all the singers myself, wasn’t the show really all about me? If anyone isn’t utterly confused yet, write to me. I’m sure I can fix that.

PLAYLIST FOR “A TURNTABLE FOR ONE FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION!” (7.4.20)

5 Jul

This was my first Fourth Of July show ever (I’m usually off during July and August). So should the show be patriotic? Ironic? Serious? Cynical? Yes, yes, yes, and yes! I celebrated with some traditional songs, plus the Buddy Rich Big Band for fireworks, Laverne Butler with a declaration of independence, tributes to Freddy Cole, Johnny Mandel, and Jim Pepper, and  songs by Dave Frishberg, Randy Newman in celebration of the First Amendment. PLAYLIST FOR “GRADUATION DAY 2018” – AN ARCHIVE RE-BROADCAST (5.23.20)

24 May

I didn’t record a new show (from home) this week. Instead I went wandering through the Turntable For One archives looking for my lost youth and innocence. No luck there, but I did find this program from June a couple of years ago, which seems now like a far distant world ago. Funny how my old themes seem less ironic and more poignant these upside-down days… This is what I said two years ago:

How about 2 hours of intelligent and coherent and compact commencement speeches and graduation messages without having to sit in the sun and wait two hour to see your kid walk across the stage and graduate in 15 seconds? Don’t try to thank me. Just doing my job.

PLAYLIST FOR “SELF-DECEPTION” (5.16.20)

17 May

The question people ask me the most is “What’s the best thing about being on the radio?” (It’s also the one question people ask me I could read on the air without upsetting the FCC.) I always tell people the best thing is talking to thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of people. Of course, the truth is (especially these days) I’m home, in my office, talking into a microphone, and the only thing listening to me is my computer (and, like my audience, it occasionally drops off to sleep). Okay, so maybe I should tell people the really best thing about being on the radio is having an opportunity week after week to indulge my insatiable capacity for self-deception. Fine. I said it. Happy now? But I’m not alone. All of these songs are about people deceiving and fooling themselves about something – with some variations of self-awareness tossed in there.
