PLAYLIST FOR “TALK THE TALK” 11.2..24

4 Nov

It’s been quite a peripatetic week, no? Trick or treaters walking up and down their neighborhoods; politicians trying to walk back their unfortunate remarks; the Yankees certainly could have used a few more walks or maybe some walk-on homers; and early  Sunday morning we walked back the hands of time an hour. So you’d think I’d dedicate the show to Walking The Walk. Walking? On radio? Nope. Spent the two hours talking the talk!

PLAYLIST FOR “TURN UP THE QUIET” 5.4.24

5 May

Here are a few recent fan emails.

Dear Turntable For One. Will you keep it down? I’m trying to sleep. (That guy is a regular.)

Dear Turntable For One – Help. I forget how to turn off my radio. Signed, Desperate on Saturday Night.  (I wasn’t able to help her.)

Dear H. William Stine. I keep asking Alexa to play quietly and she keeps saying she doesn’t know that one.

Sense a pattern here? I did. If it’s quiet they want, it’s quiet they got this week.

PLAYLIST FOR “ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARTY 2023” (3.18.23)

19 Mar

March 17th was National Sleep Day – the last holiday in the world I’d like my audience to celebrate. Fortunately, it was also St. Patrick’s Day. That’s more like it. So I presented a mixture of laughter and tears, a perfect combination for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Although, in truth, most of the tears were mine because once again I maintained my tradition of eating a celebratory bowl of Lucky Charms on the air. (Lucky Charms are now gluten-free. It didn’t help.)  Still, it was a grand night of Irish and Irish-American singers and a chance to celebrate the music of Jimmy McHugh.

PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO THE ADVERB” (4.10.21)

11 Apr

Intelligently, flawlessly, compassionately, thrillingly, unbelievably – these are just a few of the words no one has ever used in describing how I put this show together. Why? Well, I’m going to tell myself that it’s because people just don’t know how to use adverbs. So clearly it’s time for another lesson in Making Grammar Great Again. That’s why I presented proudly, defiantly, fearlessly, and oh so timely, a musical tribute to Adverbs this week.

She gave you 50% of your chromosomes, 75% of your attitudes, 90% of your self-esteem, and 100% of the conversations you have with your therapist. Moms. Where would we be without them? Doesn’t seem like there’s much to celebrate these days. But the grass is greening; trees are budding, and flowers are popping out of the ground. That means it’s time for my annual show with the musical theme, Seasonal Allergies. However, instead I chose something more positive. True, I did slip in some wonderfully grumpy Spring songs. PLAYLIST FOR: “OPEN BORDERS” (4.6.19)

7 Apr

I opened the southern border wide to celebrate just a small fraction of the songs, musicians, singers from the other side of the border who have given us so much great music. Plus I played the only Frank Sinatra song I can think of where he deliberately sings off key. And to help drive home the point of this week’s show, I also played a song from the new Broadway musical Hadestown, in which Hades, more of a demagogue than demigod, sings about building his wall around Hadestown. Sound chillingly familiar?
