PLAYLIST FOR “IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU” (4.18.20)

19 Apr

Week after week after week, for the last ten years, this show has been about three things: me, myself, and I. Sure, I’ve talked now and then about the audience and me being a team – but I’ve recently been reminded that there’s no “I” in team. And you can’t spell Turntable without “U”. So this week all of the music was dedicated and focussed on YOU. I figure after sucking up to the audience for two hours in ten years, things can get back to normal next week.

Doesn’t seem like there’s much to celebrate these days. But the grass is greening; trees are budding, and flowers are popping out of the ground. That means it’s time for my annual show with the musical theme, Seasonal Allergies. However, instead I chose something more positive. True, I did slip in some wonderfully grumpy Spring songs. PLAYLIST FOR “JUST JOE” (3.07.20)

8 Mar

I planned this show months and months ago, just a show featuring some of my favorite songs, singers, and musicians all named Joe. At the time I thought Joe Biden was toast, not someone voters months later would be toasting. Okay, times are different now, but no way I’m throwing away a good idea – especially since they are coming with less and less frequency. To give an appearance of fairness, I tossed in a couple songs for Bernie, too.

This week, WMNR is holding its Winter Fundraising Drive and so in my usual subtle and surreptitious way, I offered songs with the subliminal theme of the cleansing benefits of giving your money away. I couldn’t get to the studio this week. It turns out that GPS is useless when you’re taking an ego trip. So I went deep into the archives for a show that, sadly, is as relevant today as it was a few years ago. Maybe more. PLAYLIST FOR “LAUGHTER & TEARS” (12.7.19)

9 Dec

I’m sure I’ve mentioned a few dozen times that I’m a “glass half-empty” kind of guy. Not only do I think the glass is half-empty, I worry about who’s been drinking from my glass. I can find something sad about an IRS refund. And don’t get me started about “brown paper packages tied up with strings.” Don’t you think that’s setting the bar for happiness a little low? So, of course,  when I do a show about Laughter, I’m also going to do a show about Tears. It makes perfect sense to me – and, after all, it’s my show.

Saturday afternoon I sat in for Garrett Stack on his Broadway Bound show, two hours of Broadway’s best.  Saturday night, on Turntable For One, I celebrated Broadway music even more by playing only songs from Broadway shows, but only by jazz singers (with an exception) and musicians. PLAYLIST FOR “LET’S AGREE TO DISAGREE” (10.5.19)

5 Oct

We’re divided. I mean, really divided. We don’t agree about good guys or bad guys, we don’t agree about facts or truth, we don’t agree about ice cream being its own food group – wait, that one is just me trying to convince my wife. But all the other stuff is true!. You’d think that someone who has a microphone every week would do what he could to try to bridge the divides and bring people together. Go ahead and think that all you want, but that’s not how I roll. This week even my songs disagreed with each other. One thing was inarguable, however. I played a couple dozen outstanding singers.
