PLAYLIST FOR “TURNTABLE FOR ONE ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY” -AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST (12.18.21)

I started my Christmas vacation a little early and played the 2020 Christmas program, recorded back when we were all concerned about the pandemic and worried if large gatherings were the smartest way to celebrate the holiday. Hmmm – it seems the more things change…  Here’s the description I wrote about the show last year:

Some traditional holiday favorites, both from the show and around my house; plus a demo of a Christmas song with music composed by my son, Cody, and lyrics written by my wife, Megan. And if that weren’t enough to keep you awake and because no one begged me not to do it, once again I played the worst Christmas song ever written as sung by Robert Goulet. And what Turntable For One Christmas Party would be complete without the annual and traditional heartwarming retelling of the story of how a beloved Christmas song nearly got me expelled from Hebrew school? Merry and Happy and the best and safest holidays possible for all.  I’ll be back in the new year.

PLAYLIST FOR “12TH ANNUAL ‘MUSIC TO BE THANKFUL FOR’ SHOW” (11/27/21)

Definitely one of my favorite shows every year because it gives me a chance to highlight music I’m thankful for and to salute some of my musical heroes. This year: Tony Bennett, Stephen Sondheim, and Dave Frishberg. I also invite other WMNR broadcasters (B) and some of my favorite singers (S) to give a Thanksgiving greeting, talk about and then introduce music that’s important to them. And as if that weren’t enough, because this show always falls near my birthday (this year exactly on my birthday!), it’s also “family night” at Turntable For One when my wife and son join me at the radio station to offer their banter, eye rolls, and musical selections. This year my wife, Megan, was in the studio and introduced a song written by our son, Cody and expressed our grief at the loss of Sondheim. This year our son reported in from Columbus, Ohio, his current stop as he music directs and conducts the national tour of Hadestown.

We all have them. We may try to hide them with varying degrees of success or failure because – let’s face it – they totally reveal us, they embarrass us, and the worst ones can  actually define us for the rest of our lives. This was the week of WMNR’s Fall Fundraising Drive and many of the broadcasters and staff took to the airwaves to ask, cajole, exhort, plead, beg for listeners to call in to make a pledge. I tried to be a little more laid back, subtle, and subliminal, playing songs with telephone in the title or lyrics. I’m tired of cabin fever and Covid fever and hay fever. Time to focus on what’s really bugging me these days: Spring Fever.
