A couple weeks ago I made a joke calling myself the original Big Beautiful Bill. I thought it was pretty funny all things considered these days. But then I started worrying. What about Billy Wilder? Or Bill Buckley? Or Bill Russell? Or Bill Parcels? Or maybe even Barnacle Bill The Sailor? What about all big beautiful Bills?  Didn’t I owe them an apology? Lots going on…Sunday families will celebrate Easter. One change this year: grocery stores are hiding the eggs. Last week, my family celebrated Passover. Other things to celebate: Jackie Robinson Day, the UConn women’s basketball team  Tax day – wait!  Wrong page.  and it’s Spring!  I know; it can really hang you up the most, but, come on, you have to agree, there are definite signs of life. March 17th was National Sleep Day – the last holiday in the world I’d like my audience to celebrate. Fortunately, it was also St. Patrick’s Day. That’s more like it. So I presented a mixture of laughter and tears, a perfect combination for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Although, in truth, most of the tears were mine because once again I maintained my tradition of eating a celebratory bowl of Lucky Charms on the air. (Lucky Charms are now gluten-free. It didn’t help.)  Still, it was a grand night of Irish and Irish-American singers and a chance to celebrate the music of Jimmy McHugh.

When I was a kid, the questions I asked were Who, What, Where, and How. Mostly because I was just trying to figure out if Col. Mustard killed Miss Scarlet with the candlestick in the conservatory. (Who knew there was so much murder at Julliard?) Well, now I mostly just ask two questions: Where – as in Where did I leave my glasses? And When – as in When did we have that conversation?  So because my show is nothing if not self-involved and self-referential, I played two hours of Where or When songs. BTW: I never found my glasses.

I usually give my email during the show and when I get email, it’s usually people asking questions. Some of the questions….well…”Dear Turntable For One – How Deep is The Ocean? Why don’t you jump in and report back.” You’ll be happy to know that person had his radio taken away from him. Think twice about messing with a radio host. But most of questions I get are important questions because people want me to give them important answers. I couldn’t make it to the station this week, but did that mean no St. Patrick’s Day party this year? Nope. I dug this show from 2019 out of the archives. This is what I wrote about the show back then:

 

 

It’s been a Turntable For One St. Patrick’s Day tradition for me to play some jazz singers from Ireland, a few Irish-American (or at least half-Irish-American) singers and musicians, and – always a highlight – for me to eat some traditional Irish food on the air – which, of course, means  a bowl of Lucky Charms. And, as if hearing me struggle and choke wasn’t incentive enough, I made this year’s party a celebration of the songs of Jimmy McHugh, the wonderful Irish-American composer.

PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO UNCERTAINTY” – AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST (1.29.22)

I am certain of one thing: this weekend it snowed. It snowed a ton. And I didn’t make it to the station. So instead we listened to a show from last Fall. It certainly filled the two hours. And what else? Well, about that I am uncertain. Here’s what I wrote about the show back then:

Okay, everyone finds this poem iconic and inspiring. Really? Do you know where these roads go? I don’t. Do you know if there are bears or poison ivy or rest stops? I don’t. So how can you be so certain you’re making a good decision and not a bad mistake? You can’t! You can’t be certain and that’s about the only thing you can be certain of. Especially when I spent two hours presenting A Musical Tribute To Uncertainty. (Did everyone love it? Well, I’m not entirely certain about that…)
