PLAYLIST FOR “LAUGHING AT LIFE”-AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST (2.5.22)

6 Feb

A show from the archives, this time from back in 2017, which explains why you can hear the last vestiges of hope in my voice. Here’s how I introduced the show back then…

It’s true that smiling requires more muscles than frowning, which must be why smiling always tires me so quickly. Still, considering all that we know and fear about the world today, I thought it was worth spending a couple hours focusing on laughing and smiling. Okay, I didn’t feel any better at the end of the program, but at least I got to share some great songs and singers and some of my favorite laughs.

PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO UNCERTAINTY” – AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST (1.29.22)

30 Jan

I am certain of one thing: this weekend it snowed. It snowed a ton. And I didn’t make it to the station. So instead we listened to a show from last Fall. It certainly filled the two hours. And what else? Well, about that I am uncertain. Here’s what I wrote about the show back then:

 “The Road Not Taken”

By Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could.

Okay, everyone finds this poem iconic and inspiring. Really? Do you know where these roads go? I don’t. Do you know if there are bears or poison ivy or rest stops? I don’t. So how can you be so certain you’re making a good decision and not a bad mistake? You can’t! You can’t be certain and that’s about the only thing you can be certain of. Especially when I spent two hours presenting A Musical Tribute To Uncertainty. (Did everyone love it? Well, I’m not entirely certain about that…)

PLAYLIST FOR “BABY TALK” (1.15.22)

17 Jan

Taking baby steps – isn’t that what I was doing in my driveway after the last snow storm? Out of the mouths of babes – isn’t that why we put bibs on them? Sleep like a baby – I’m sure my audience can relate to that. Throw the baby out with the bath water – doesn’t that just mean it’s time to get your eyes examined? What’s with all the baby stuff, Bill? Because this week I dedicated the show to nothing but baby talk with some wonderful singers and, of course, the usual babbling and gurgling from me.

Sure, it looks like they’re sleeping on the job – much like my audience. But singers have been singing the praises of “babies” – both literal and metaphoric – for  generations. What’s that? Prove it? Okay, I will.

PLAYLIST FOR “ANNIVERSARY” (1.8.22)

9 Jan

2022 is just a week old, but it’s been an eventful week. We observed the one-year anniversary of one of the most disgraceful, unforgettable, unforgivable moments in American history. On a happier note – there are happier notes. WMNR Fine Arts Radio celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2022.  On a personal note, my wife and I celebrated our 52nd anniversary this week. Did we go to a fabulous restaurant?  No, not when omicron is on most menus as a main course. Did we go ice skating? (Something Megan has loved her entire life.) Let me just say that the only things more brittle than my ego are my bones. So we went dancing instead?  Did you hear what I just said about my bones?  Actually, no, that one’s more about my ego.  Which finally brings me to this week’s theme if anyone is still awake. I wanted to celebrate my anniversary and my wife with some of the music that brought us together, some of the music Megan and I discovered together, some of the music that has sustained us. In short: just when you thought this show couldn’t get more self-indulgent, I presented two hours of Music We Love on this Happy Anniversary edition of Turntable For One. (Starting with the music that played when Megan walked down the aisle at our wedding.)

PLAYLIST FOR “TURNTABLE FOR ONE ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY” -AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST (12.18.21)

19 Dec

I started my Christmas vacation a little early and played the 2020 Christmas program, recorded back when we were all concerned about the pandemic and worried if large gatherings were the smartest way to celebrate the holiday. Hmmm – it seems the more things change…  Here’s the description I wrote about the show last year:

Some traditional holiday favorites, both from the show and around my house; plus a demo of a Christmas song with music composed by my son, Cody, and lyrics written by my wife, Megan. And if that weren’t enough to keep you awake and because no one begged me not to do it, once again I played the worst Christmas song ever written as sung by Robert Goulet. And what Turntable For One Christmas Party would be complete without the annual and traditional heartwarming retelling of the story of how a beloved Christmas song nearly got me expelled from Hebrew school? Merry and Happy and the best and safest holidays possible for all.  I’ll be back in the new year.

PLAYLIST FOR “NEW HOLIDAY MUSIC 2021” (12.11.21)

12 Dec

It’s that time of year again. The season of Peace On Earth and Good Will toward Men. How’s that going so far? Not great, I know. Why not? I think this is clearly another example of a supply chain problem. Still, there are some who have tried to spread holiday spirit undaunted by pandemics and politics and vaccination vexations. I mean  the singers, songwriters, and musicians who created a ton of new holiday CDs and music. They were the stars this week.
