PLAYLIST FOR ” A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN” (1.12.19)

13 Jan

Turntable For One is all about problems – certainly not solving them, more like creating them, exacerbating them, and at the very least exploiting them. So this week I tackled the problem of the government shutdown. What did I do? I played music, of course, but I also dedicated the program to the 800,000 federal employees who have gone from figuring out how to live paycheck to paycheck to how to live no paycheck to no paycheck. The President said he didn’t want to call this a shutdown. I agree. How about travesty?

PLAYLIST FOR “PREVIEW OF COMING ATTRACTIONS FOR 2019” (1.5.19)

6 Jan

The year in music didn’t start on a happy note. Kellye Gray, a unique and passionate singer died suddenly. Still, with all of these interesting new singers and all of the music being released we’ve never heard before from singers and musicians we know and love, I tried to tell my audience 2019 was going to be a good year for Turntable For One. (I’d say it was like preaching to the choir, but I don’t think any choirs listen to my show.)

30 Dec

I spent a couple of hours reflecting on some of the weekly musical themes from the past year and some of my favorite musical discoveries in an attempt – probably a futile one – to distract the audience from reflecting on all of the things they could have been doing instead of listening to my show every week. PLAYLIST FOR “WINNERS AND LOSERS” (11.3.18)

29 Dec

Soon it will all be in the rearview mirror; the midterms will have passed, and we’ll know who are the winners and who are the losers. It will all be over – except for the celebrating, the crying, the blaming, the lawsuits, the recounts, the excuses, the recriminations, the marches, the protests. So just to ease my listeners into this traditional, all-American period of jubilation and mourning, I played songs abut winning and losing. The singers, however, were all total winners.

Last night’s show was all about me – no, it’s not what you’re thinking. Check out the song titles and you’ll see that the show was all about “me,” not me. Saturday afternoon, I sat in for Garrett Stack on his program American Jukebox, rock and pop hits of the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s.  So I thought I’d spend Saturday evening on my show playing jazz versions of pop tunes. PLAYLIST FOR “HALLOWEEN PARTY 2018” (10.27.18)

28 Oct

Time for my annual Halloween party with haunting melodies sung by some of my favorite ghosts and others. Another Turntable For One tradition: trick or treaters coming to the door dressed in celebrity costumes and me handing out appropriate songs to them (since I’ve usually eaten all of the Halloween candy by then). This year, because of the truly scary and horrible events of Saturday and the past week(s), I started with a special Nina Simone song I’d play if the poor battered and beleaguered world came to my door. Nina recorded that song in 1968. Why is it still so heartbreakingly relevant today?
