PLAYLIST FOR “PLAYING NICE” 11.15.25

16 Nov

It started when we were kids, I mean little kids. Our teachers would tell us. Our parents would tell us. Our aunts and uncles, cousins, and sometime even the mail carrier would tell us: Play Nice! (Of course my parents also told me not to lock my little sister in the trunk of our Chevy Impala – but that’s for another show). Playing Nice – it’s a phrase, an admonition, and a concept that’s kind of gone out of fashion these days.  But not while I have this microphone, because for two hours, I just played nice – nice songs by singers and musicians who know how to play nice.

PLAYLIST FOR “CHRISTMAS PARTY 2024” 12.21.24

23 Dec

The last live show of the year so it was time to party! I told a few bad jokes, made a few insulting remarks, the audience got mad and drank too much. I know, that sounds like every other Turntable For One. What made it a party? Fabulous and favorite Christmas songs from old stars and new. And I recited a prayer for lighting the Menorah, revisited some uncomfortable memories of less-than carefree Hebrew school youth, and played a couple new Hanukah songs. Did I see a Hanukah miracle that night? Yep. My car started after the show even though the temperature had plummeted into the low teens. Happy Holidays, one and all!!

PLAYLIST FOR “NEW HOLIDAY MUSIC 2021” (12.11.21)

12 Dec

It’s that time of year again. The season of Peace On Earth and Good Will toward Men. How’s that going so far? Not great, I know. Why not? I think this is clearly another example of a supply chain problem. Still, there are some who have tried to spread holiday spirit undaunted by pandemics and politics and vaccination vexations. I mean  the singers, songwriters, and musicians who created a ton of new holiday CDs and music. They were the stars this week.

PLAYLIST FOR “POSITIVE VIBES” (11.14.20)

15 Nov

I tried a little experiment this week – an experiment in terror for me, that is. Could I send out nothing but positive vibes and eschew my inherent pessimism for an entire two hours? It seems to me the times demand this kind of sacrifice and I went for it with a collection of positive songs, positive singers, positive people (a mini-tribute to Fred Rogers), and a few of my favorite oh-so-positive vibes players – messers Gibbs, Wolfe, and Jackson. And for an extra treat – maybe for me only – I did the show live and in person at the station, something that’s not going to happen again until the infection rates really start to dive.

PLAYLIST FOR “SARCASM OR NOT SARCASM: A TURNTABLE FOR ONE QUIZ” (5.2.20)

3 May

In times of trouble, people turn to Turntable For One for answers. Yes, it’s inexplicable to me, too. For instance…

Dear Turntable For One – I hear there is light at the end of the tunnel. Should I insert that light into my body.     TFO: No – wrong tunnel.

Dear Turntable For One – Can I mix Mountain Dew and Clorox?     TFO: If you’re drinking Mountain Dew, you don’t need the Clorox.

Dear Turntable For One – How can I tell if a politician is really making a sarcastic joke and not just saying something idiotic?   TFO:  Sarcastic jokes and politicians don’t usually go together. But we’ve been hearing a lot about sarcastic jokes in the White House lately. Time for a refresher course on recognizing true sarcasm when you hear it.

(Warning: The quiz included some trick questions.)
