PLAYLIST FOR “CONTRAFACTUM” (3.28.20)

Contrafactum – it’s not just a word on Jeopardy.  Contrafactum are two different songs with the same melody but different lyrics. To jazz musicians, they are two tunes with the same chordal structure. (I tossed a few of those in for good measure – excuse the pun.) Who said educational radio is dead? I’m sure I’ve mentioned a few dozen times that I’m a “glass half-empty” kind of guy. Not only do I think the glass is half-empty, I worry about who’s been drinking from my glass. I can find something sad about an IRS refund. And don’t get me started about “brown paper packages tied up with strings.” Don’t you think that’s setting the bar for happiness a little low? So, of course,  when I do a show about Laughter, I’m also going to do a show about Tears. It makes perfect sense to me – and, after all, it’s my show.

You know what drives me crazy? People who over-use already tired rhetorical cliches, such as “With all due respect” – which is always a lie. My least favorite: “I got two words for you…” I thought (hoped) if I used that phrase over and over and over for two hours and if every song I played had a two-word title, maybe – just maybe – people would think twice (or maybe even once) and not use that annoying expression. Did it work? I got three words for myself: “In your dreams.”

PLAYLIST FOR “9TH ANNUAL MUSIC TO BE THANKFUL FOR” SHOW (11.24.18)

This is a special show I wait for every year. In addition to presenting some of the music I’ve been thankful for during the past year, I ask some of my fellow broadcasters to record a brief intro for their choices, because it’s also “Family Night At Turntable For One,” so my wife and son offer their choices, plus I ask a few of my favorite singers to tell my audience about a song or singer they’re thankful for. PLAYLIST FOR “HALLOWEEN PARTY 2018” (10.27.18)

Time for my annual Halloween party with haunting melodies sung by some of my favorite ghosts and others. Another Turntable For One tradition: trick or treaters coming to the door dressed in celebrity costumes and me handing out appropriate songs to them (since I’ve usually eaten all of the Halloween candy by then). This year, because of the truly scary and horrible events of Saturday and the past week(s), I started with a special Nina Simone song I’d play if the poor battered and beleaguered world came to my door. Nina recorded that song in 1968. Why is it still so heartbreakingly relevant today?
