What on earth is going on?  Punching in the house of representatives.  Senators challenging witnesses to fight.  Road rage.  Parking lot rage; grocery store rage. What’s next? Everyone loved Orange Is The New Black. You know what we didn’t love? Orange Is The New Blue when huge, thick, toxic orange clouds of smoke from Canadian forest fires enveloped our cities, giving new meaning to huddled masses yearning to breathe free. Thanks, Canada. As if sending us Celine Dion wasn’t bad enough. I knew I had to do something sensitive and sympathetic for the millions of people who suffered this week. But instead I chose to exploit this tragedy to get some ironic laughs with tunes from the Climate Change Hit Parade.

Something historic happened today; something that hasn’t happened in 70 years.  No, I’m not talking about me getting  back on the uneven parallel bars. I’m talking about the coronation of a new king and queen in the United Kingdom.  Whatever you think of the royal family, I thought it was a relief to focus on pomp and circumstance for a few hours instead of pomposity and circumstantial evidence. To continue my good feelings, I brought a bowl of Royal butterscotch pudding and a bun with Royal icing for snacks. I wrote my opening on my trusty Royal 10 typewriter, and I hummed the Royal Garden Blues on my drive to the radio station. Clearly I was feeling a royal flush, so I celebrated Monarchy Mania his week with lots of songs about royalty and songs by British and American music royalty.

March 17th was National Sleep Day – the last holiday in the world I’d like my audience to celebrate. Fortunately, it was also St. Patrick’s Day. That’s more like it. So I presented a mixture of laughter and tears, a perfect combination for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Although, in truth, most of the tears were mine because once again I maintained my tradition of eating a celebratory bowl of Lucky Charms on the air. (Lucky Charms are now gluten-free. It didn’t help.)  Still, it was a grand night of Irish and Irish-American singers and a chance to celebrate the music of Jimmy McHugh.

Usually I play 20-24 different singers, musicians, Mystery Vocalists each week. This week I challenged myself to play more. My goal was 57 different artists. Originally, my plan was play something by The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, say Good Night, and go home. But because the choir threatened to sue me if I even mentioned their name on my show – probably for elder abuse – I had to come up with a different solution.

When I was a kid, the questions I asked were Who, What, Where, and How. Mostly because I was just trying to figure out if Col. Mustard killed Miss Scarlet with the candlestick in the conservatory. (Who knew there was so much murder at Julliard?) Well, now I mostly just ask two questions: Where – as in Where did I leave my glasses? And When – as in When did we have that conversation?  So because my show is nothing if not self-involved and self-referential, I played two hours of Where or When songs. BTW: I never found my glasses.
