I’m usually doing my annual Halloween show about now, playing classic Halloween songs and greeting trick or treaters at the door. This year I was doing all of the begging and pleading because Fine Arts Radio was practicing the fine art of fundraising! So with my penchant for throwing subtlety to the wind, I played an evening of duets and duos to urge listeners to put their money where my mouth is. Usually I play 20-24 different singers, musicians, Mystery Vocalists each week. This week I challenged myself to play more. My goal was 57 different artists. Originally, my plan was play something by The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, say Good Night, and go home. But because the choir threatened to sue me if I even mentioned their name on my show – probably for elder abuse – I had to come up with a different solution.

I didn’t make it to the station this week, so I played a show from when I was younger and the world was easier to understand. Okay, just when I was younger. Here’s what I said about it the first time around:

“‘What we got here is failure to communicate,’ said one of the most reprehensible yet prescient movie villains of all time. That line of dialogue has been playing frequently in my head these days. How can we communicate better? Of course, my answer to this and so many other questions is simple: better grammar. So in my continuing effort to leave no listener behind, I made a case for the vocative case, another term for the function of grammar known as direct address. All of the songs served as examples, using a name, a term of endearment, or a feeling to grab the attention of the intended object of communication. If only the rest of the world would function according to the orderly, predictable precepts in my dog-eared high school grammar book.”

Couldn’t do a live show this week, so I led my audience on a trip down memory lane…which, admittedly, is becoming a shorter and shorter trip for me. Here’s what I wrote when the show was first broadcast.

He gave us so much wonderful, unforgettable music. Wait, you’re thinking of that Frank? I was thinking of Frank Loesser and I tried to squeeze as many gems in his voluminous songbook from movies, Broadway, and popular song into a couple hours as I could. But before the Evening With Frank began, I opened the show again with another song from a young Ukrainian jazz singer who remains (as of this posting) safe and even hopeful in Kyiv.

A couple of weeks ago I was watching a college football game. The final score was pretty humiliating – 77 to 21. And after the game, do you know what the losing coach said? “We lost.” He didn’t say, the game was rigged or it was stolen. We all have them. Maybe we call them quirks or superstitions. Let’s call them by their real names – fears and phobias. Fear of Heights – it’s called Acrophobia. Dentrophobia – fear of Dentists. Even I have a phobia: The Fear of Howie Mandel suddenly showing up at my door. I’m sure there’s a name of that but I haven’t found it yet. Most of our phobias are manageable and many are actually curable. Here’s my question: are they exploitable, by which I mean could I get two hours of music out of them? Songs about phobias, songs to help overcome phobias – two hours of immersion therapy in swing.
