PLAYLIST FOR “FAMOUS ADDRESSES” 6.7.25

For some reason I seem to be in “get out of Dodge mode” these days. Can’t imagine why. Had to take a “snow day” and play a show from the archive. Don’t want to make a habit of it, but snow happens. Here’s what I said about the show in 2021:

We all have them. We may try to hide them with varying degrees of success or failure because – let’s face it – they totally reveal us, they embarrass us, and the worst ones can  actually define us for the rest of our lives. Of course I’m talking about our high school yearbook photos. Of course I’m not talking about our high school yearbook photos. I’m talking about Bad Habits. So it was nothing but Bad Habits this week – ranging from binge watching to smoking, drinking, co-dependence. magical thinking, and more. I’d go on but I’ve been told that rambling is a bad habit.

PLAYLIST FOR “SEASON FINALE 2023” (7.1.23)

Final show of the season, but I did not go gentle into that good night. I went down swinging. For the first hour I handed out summer listening assignments, music my audience should be listening to while my show is on hiatus. Of course, I included my annual segment of ice cream treats from my ice cream truck, my summer job. Things like the “Rainbow Sherbet Pride Parfait” (Not available in Florida), the “Unsinkable Titan Treat,”the “Mar-A-Lago Milkshake,” and the “Disney Delight” (also not available in Florida). The second hour could be subtitled, “The Long Goodbye.”

It’s time for the Oscars again. And, yes, you can fault the Oscars for being over-the-top – over the top egos, over the top vanity, over the top self-adulation. On the other hand, what do people who don’t win usually say? “It’s an honor just to be nominated.” And I can’t remember anyone at the Oscars insisting the voting was rigged or asking for a recount. I’m just saying… So in honor of the Academy Awards, I brought back a longtime Turntable for One tradition, listening to some wonderful Oscar nominated songs. Not the winners! PLAYLIST FOR “SOCIAL DISTANCING” (3.21.20)

At times like these – perilous times, uncertain times – people turn to Turntable For One for information and advice. Clearly these are people who’ve never listened to the show before. But, okay, I can totally pretend to abandon my usual format and inveterate cynicism to talk about something serious. Social Distancing. What is it? How do I do it? And what can I do while I’m doing it? I think these songs demonstrate some of the actions and attitudes people should adopt to fill the long months ahead. I also threw in Stacey Kent and Rachael & Vilray to remind people of what we won’t be able to do, perhaps for a long, long time. A little salt never really hurts a wound, does it?

PLAYLIST FOR: “OPEN BORDERS” (4.6.19)

I opened the southern border wide to celebrate just a small fraction of the songs, musicians, singers from the other side of the border who have given us so much great music. Plus I played the only Frank Sinatra song I can think of where he deliberately sings off key. And to help drive home the point of this week’s show, I also played a song from the new Broadway musical Hadestown, in which Hades, more of a demagogue than demigod, sings about building his wall around Hadestown. The year in music didn’t start on a happy note. Kellye Gray, a unique and passionate singer died suddenly.
