PLAYLIST FOR “YEAR IN REVIEW 2019” (12.28.19)

I took a look back at some of my favorite themes from 2019 and some of my favorite songs from them. I couldn’t get to the studio this week. It turns out that GPS is useless when you’re taking an ego trip. So I went deep into the archives for a show that, sadly, is as relevant today as it was a few years ago. Maybe more. PLAYLIST FOR “LAUGHTER & TEARS” (12.7.19)

9 Dec

I’m sure I’ve mentioned a few dozen times that I’m a “glass half-empty” kind of guy. Not only do I think the glass is half-empty, I worry about who’s been drinking from my glass. I can find something sad about an IRS refund. And don’t get me started about “brown paper packages tied up with strings.” Don’t you think that’s setting the bar for happiness a little low? So, of course,  when I do a show about Laughter, I’m also going to do a show about Tears. It makes perfect sense to me – and, after all, it’s my show.

3 Nov

Saturday afternoon I sat in for Garrett Stack on his Broadway Bound show, two hours of Broadway’s best.  Saturday night, on Turntable For One, I celebrated Broadway music even more by playing only songs from Broadway shows, but only by jazz singers (with an exception) and musicians. 27 Oct

My Tenth Annual Halloween party with more treats than tricks. I got to play my favorite haunting melodies with  a number of them sung by some of my favorite ghosts. Of course, my favorite part every year is the game of being visited by trick or treaters and having to guess their costumes. Instead giving them candy, I hand out appropriate songs. PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO CLIMATE CHANGE” (10.19.19)

20 Oct

The earth is heating up, ice caps and glaciers are melting, the seas are rising, and many species, including our own, are threatened with extinction. What are we going to do? Well, I did what I always do: I exploited these serious problems, trivializing them with two hours of catchy, swinging, and often ironic songs. Some of them were comments on current conditions; others were things we need to curtail to save the planet. The first song was an answer to “What’s going to be the new capital city of the East Coast?” The second song was written in 1921 but casts an eerie darkness to what’s going on today. Just to be a pro-active citizen, I recycled and re-used a previous mystery vocalist. And as for the last two songs: which one will future generations be singing? That’s up to us now.

PLAYLIST FOR “GIVE & TAKE WEEK” (10.12.19)

13 Oct

The two words, give and take, are frequently associated with my show, although usually in the form of “Give me a break!” and “I’m going to take a nap.” But this week all of the songs had either the words or the concepts of giving and taking. Plus it was the audience’s turn to get involved because it was Fall Fundraising week at WMNR, Fine Arts Radio (wmnr.org); so with phone and on-line pledges people put their money where my mouth is, supporting the show and this wonderful anomaly of a radio station. Thanks!

PLAYLIST FOR “LET’S AGREE TO DISAGREE” (10.5.19)

5 Oct

We’re divided. I mean, really divided. We don’t agree about good guys or bad guys, we don’t agree about facts or truth, we don’t agree about ice cream being its own food group – wait, that one is just me trying to convince my wife. But all the other stuff is true!. You’d think that someone who has a microphone every week would do what he could to try to bridge the divides and bring people together. Go ahead and think that all you want, but that’s not how I roll. This week even my songs disagreed with each other. One thing was inarguable, however. I played a couple dozen outstanding singers.

PLAYLIST FOR “KNOWN AND UNKNOWN” (9.28.19)

28 Sep

This week’s show was ripped from the headlines with only superficial wounds as a result. Day after day we find out there are things we do know and things we don’t know. Since I’ve demonstrated time after time that I have no shame about exploiting current situations, I dedicated the show to the known and the unknown. I know I got away with it, while it’s unknown to me how I did it.
