It’s that time again. Time for ghost and goblins and ghouls; time for witches, curses, and the walking dead. And that means it’s time for my annual musical tribute to Congress. Whoops – wrong calendar! I mean it’s time for my annual Halloween Party. I play my favorite Halloween songs, and when trick or treaters come to the door, I get to guess who they’re dressed up to be, and then hand out an appropriate song. What do these things have in common: a pogo stick, a diving board, a trampoline?  Three things I wouldn’t be caught dead on? True but not what I was thinking. The three worst golden anniversary gifts? Also true but I couldn’t get two hours of music out of that. Answer: they all have springs! And that’s what I celebrated with two hours of Spring songs, with a nod to Spring planting with Mark Jennett, Spring Fever with Gretje Angell, and Spring cleaning with Kevin Mahogany. Proving once again that Turntable For One comes in like a lamb and goes out like a lamb chop.

Usually I play 20-24 different singers, musicians, Mystery Vocalists each week. This week I challenged myself to play more. My goal was 57 different artists. Originally, my plan was play something by The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, say Good Night, and go home. But because the choir threatened to sue me if I even mentioned their name on my show – probably for elder abuse – I had to come up with a different solution.

PLAYLIST FOR “HALLOWEEN PARTY 2022” – (10.29.22)

One of my favorite shows of the year, not just because I get to play some favorite Halloween songs, but because when trick or treaters come to the door, I get to guess who they’re dressed up as. Of course, instead of handing out candy, I play a song that matches their costume. This year, somehow, a cat rang the doorbell, so I played a couple songs in honor of National Cat Day. By the way – and no surprise here – Holly Cole won the prize for the spookiest song. It may not be a Halloween song, but it’s fabulously scary, if you ask me.

PLAYLIST FOR “ANNIVERSARY” (1.8.22)

 2022 is just a week old, but it’s been an eventful week. We observed the one-year anniversary of one of the most disgraceful, unforgettable, unforgivable moments in American history. On a happier note – there are happier notes. WMNR Fine Arts Radio celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2022.  On a personal note, my wife and I celebrated our 52nd anniversary this week. Did we go to a fabulous restaurant?  No, not when omicron is on most menus as a main course. Did we go ice skating? (Something Megan has loved her entire life.) Let me just say that the only things more brittle than my ego are my bones. So we went dancing instead?  Did you hear what I just said about my bones?  Actually, no, that one’s more about my ego.  Which finally brings me to this week’s theme if anyone is still awake. I wanted to celebrate my anniversary and my wife with some of the music that brought us together, some of the music Megan and I discovered together, some of the music that has sustained us. In short: just when you thought this show couldn’t get more self-indulgent, I presented two hours of Music We Love on this Happy Anniversary edition of Turntable For One.
