Webster may be the champion of spellers and Fowler the God of Grammar, but my mother was the unchallenged monarch of the mixed message, offering such gems as “Is that a new haircut? Maybe your friends won’t notice.” “That’s a funny joke. Do you think anyone will get it?” “A new job? Wonderful. I hope it’s not too much for you.” (I could go on and on and on – but I think you get the idea.) I divided the show into two parts this week, one part the traditional Turntable For One party for St. Patrick’s Day, replete with Irish singers and musicians, Irish-American singers and musicians, and the most important Turntable for One tradition of all: me eating a bowl of Lucky Charms on the air. Okay, everyone finds this poem iconic and inspiring. Really? Do you know where these roads go? I don’t. Do you know if there are bears or poison ivy or rest stops? I don’t. After doing about a dozen Valentine’s Day shows over the years, I needed something new for this year’s theme. Out of the blue this theme came to me. I don’t know why I thought of it. Well, that didn’t take very long, 2021. You went from an exhilarating high on Tuesday to an abysmal low on Wednesday. In utter disbelief of  events we all were watching, I looked for a modicum of solace, peace, and even hope from a familiar source: comfort food – ice cream, mashed potatoes, peanut butter on matzoh.
