We all have them. We may try to hide them with varying degrees of success or failure because – let’s face it – they totally reveal us, they embarrass us, and the worst ones can actually define us for the rest of our lives. Of course I’m talking about our high school yearbook photos. Of course I’m not talking about our high school yearbook photos. I’m talking about Bad Habits. PLAYLIST FOR “A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO THE TELEPHONE” (9.25.21)

This was the week of WMNR’s Fall Fundraising Drive and many of the broadcasters and staff took to the airwaves to ask, cajole, exhort, plead, beg for listeners to call in to make a pledge. I tried to be a little more laid back, subtle, and subliminal, playing songs with telephone in the title or lyrics. Plus I also asked, cajoled, exhorted, etc., etc. to make a few buck for the station. Wondering what Just In Time and The Party’s Over has to do with the telephone? What does it take to lose weight? Willpower. Stop biting your nails? Willpower. What does it take to stop watching America’s Got Talent? Half a brain – but that’s a different issue. Getting back on topic: what does it take to give up smoking? Again, Willpower. So let me get this straight: Willpower is forcing yourself not to do something. Wouldn’t it make more sense to call it Won’t-power? But no – everyone gives Willpower all the praise and approbation. Well, not this week! I think Won’t is just as important to songwriters as Will – maybe more important. I tried to prove that with songs about Will and Won’t. I won’t tell you which side won; but I will tell you the music definitely won.

Webster may be the champion of spellers and Fowler the God of Grammar, but my mother was the unchallenged monarch of the mixed message, offering such gems as “Is that a new haircut? Maybe your friends won’t notice.” “That’s a funny joke. Do you think anyone will get it?” “A new job? Wonderful. I hope it’s not too much for you.” (I could go on and on and on – but I think you get the idea.) I’m tired of cabin fever and Covid fever and hay fever. Time to focus on what’s really bugging me these days: Spring Fever. Lots of songs about Spring plus a report from Spring Break from The Hot Sardines, a song to put a little Spring in your step from Lucy Dixon, and a demonstration of Spring cleaning from Kevin Mahogany, and presented the Turntable For One Spring Chickens Award to Freda Payne & Johnny Mathis. After doing about a dozen Valentine’s Day shows over the years, I needed something new for this year’s theme. Out of the blue this theme came to me. I don’t know why I thought of it.
