What does it take to lose weight? Willpower. Stop biting your nails? Willpower. What does it take to stop watching America’s Got Talent? Half a brain – but that’s a different issue. Getting back on topic: what does it take to give up smoking? Again, Willpower. So let me get this straight: Willpower is forcing yourself not to do something. Wouldn’t it make more sense to call it Won’t-power?  But no – everyone gives Willpower all the praise and approbation. Well, not  this week! I think Won’t is just as important to songwriters as Will – maybe more important. I tried to prove that with songs about Will and Won’t. I won’t tell you which side won; but I will tell you the music definitely won.

Webster may be the champion of spellers and Fowler the God of Grammar, but my mother was the unchallenged monarch of the mixed message, offering such gems as “Is that a new haircut? Maybe your friends won’t notice.” “That’s a funny joke. Do you think anyone will get it?” “A new job? Wonderful. After doing about a dozen Valentine’s Day shows over the years, I needed something new for this year’s theme. Out of the blue this theme came to me. I don’t know why I thought of it. PLAYLIST FOR “MOOD” (1.23.21)

If i were posting on Instagram or Facebook, I could just post an appropriate photo with one single word, MOOD. That doesn’t work so well on radio, so instead I played songs that captured my mood this week as I watched everything that happened, everything that (thank God) didn’t happen, and indulged in the feeling of a new beginning and new hope. We’ll see how long that lasts. For now, I’m in a pretty damned good mood.

Well, that didn’t take very long, 2021. You went from an exhilarating high on Tuesday to an abysmal low on Wednesday. In utter disbelief of  events we all were watching, I looked for a modicum of solace, peace, and even hope from a familiar source: comfort food – ice cream, mashed potatoes, peanut butter on matzoh.
