PLAYLIST FOR “DISINFORMATION WEEK” (3.5.22)

Disinformation. It’s a word we’re hearing frequently these days. Some people call Disinformation propaganda; some people with a straight face call it alternative facts. I call it pernicious lies. So I spent two hours defining and explicating Disinformation; and, most importantly, telling people how to protect themselves from it. JUST KIDDING! You know me. Instead, I spent the two hours exploiting this sensitive issue and squeezing every last drop of irony and rueful laughter from it. But before things got too silly, I started the show with a much-too appropriately titled Ukrainian folk song, recognizing the only thing breaking apart faster than my heart is the world

Taking baby steps – isn’t that what I was doing in my driveway after the last snow storm? Out of the mouths of babes – isn’t that why we put bibs on them? Sleep like a baby – I’m sure my audience can relate to that. Throw the baby out with the bath water – doesn’t that just mean it’s time to get your eyes examined? In the beginning was the Word. Okay, fine. But not this week. Not on this show. Almost everything I played started out as an instrumental and the lyrics came later. To bring things back to reality, I ended with a melody played so beautifully that I don’t think it really needed the lyrics added later and, finally, with a lyric that Johnny Mercer wrote but didn’t live long enough to set to music.

It’s that time again, time when ghastly, ghostly white apparitions appear. The living dead, their eyes open but unseeing, their mouths moving but they say nothing. I know, I just described the U.S. Senate, but that’s not what the show was about this week. I served up a bobbing bucket full of great ghoulish songs at the annual Turntable for One Halloween party! This was the week of WMNR’s Fall Fundraising Drive and many of the broadcasters and staff took to the airwaves to ask, cajole, exhort, plead, beg for listeners to call in to make a pledge. I tried to be a little more laid back, subtle, and subliminal, playing songs with telephone in the title or lyrics. What does it take to lose weight? Willpower. Stop biting your nails? Willpower. What does it take to stop watching America’s Got Talent? Half a brain – but that’s a different issue. Getting back on topic: what does it take to give up smoking? Again, Willpower. So let me get this straight: Willpower is forcing yourself not to do something. Wouldn’t it make more sense to call it Won’t-power?  But no – everyone gives Willpower all the praise and approbation. Well, not  this week! I think Won’t is just as important to songwriters as Will – maybe more important. I tried to prove that with songs about Will and Won’t.
