PLAYLIST FOR “SOMETHING GOOD MIGHT HAPPEN” (6.8.19)

9 Jun

I’m have always been a “the-glass-is-half-empty” kind of guy. (I also worry who’s been drinking from that glass.) Why? Growing up, my family had a clear and distinct world view: “Something bad might happen.” So this week I challenged – no, I dared myself to look through the eyes of people who actually (and inexplicably) see the world positively. I played song after song about things possibly going right and how to make that happen. Happily I got through it but only by repeating my daily, personal affirmation: “What on earth were you thinking?”

PLAYLIST FOR “LOOK WHAT I FOUND IN THE MAILBOX!” (5.25.19)

27 May

Instead of a theme, instead of featuring the oft-heard Turntable For One regulars – Sinatra, Tony, Carmen, Ella, Nina, etc. – I put Saturday’s show together with only some of the new music I received in the mail (both physical and virtual) in just the past two weeks. I generously didn’t go into the other things I find in my mail – things like memorial headstone catalogs and threatening letters from Social Security since they found out that I am neither social nor secure. Also: here’s a shout out to all of the singers and musicians listed below – young and old – and to their promoters; without them my audience and I would just have to stare at each other for two hours, and I think we know who would lose that staring contest.

19 May

Angry. Bitter. Vindictive. Sarcastic. Belittling. Bullying – no I’m not trying to come up with my professional wrestler name. Haven’t you noticed? That’s how people talk to each other these days. Whatever happened to listening? Whatever happened to “if you don’t have anything nice to say…” I mean, whatever happened to civil discourse? I know, that’s so old world. Okay, I’ll join the new world – if only for two hours.

PLAYLIST FOR “CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY 2019” (4.27.19)

28 Apr

Okay, I know I was celebrating International Jazz Day a little early. But I was eager to feature a few of the singers from around the world who are fighting the good fight to keep jazz alive, thriving, and swinging. I also asked some of my favorites to  record messages introducing a song or singer important and influential to them. PLAYLIST FOR: “OPEN BORDERS” (4.6.19)

7 Apr

I opened the southern border wide to celebrate just a small fraction of the songs, musicians, singers from the other side of the border who have given us so much great music. Plus I played the only Frank Sinatra song I can think of where he deliberately sings off key. And to help drive home the point of this week’s show, I also played a song from the new Broadway musical Hadestown, in which Hades, more of a demagogue than demigod, sings about building his wall around Hadestown. Sound chillingly familiar?

PLAYLIST FOR “I’M IN THE MOOD FOR THE SUBJUNCTIVE” (3.30.19)

30 Mar

In an effort to save an endangered and near extinct treasure – good grammar, I renewed my effort to MGGA – Make Grammar Great Again – and offered a remedial lesson in the subjunctive, that form of grammar that expresses wishes and desires for things we don’t have. Generally it takes 12 muscles to smile and 11 muscles to frown. But the 25 songs I played don’t even begin to capture the complexity, the intensity, the subtleties,  and the diversity of bitterness.
