Okay, I know I was celebrating International Jazz Day a little early. But I was eager to feature a few of the singers from around the world who are fighting the good fight to keep jazz alive, thriving, and swinging. I also asked some of my favorites to record messages introducing a song or singer important and influential to them. Not surprisingly, these wonderful singers all chose American singers as their gold standard. If only that were true here in the country where jazz was born.

The Oscars, the Tonys, the Golden Globes, the Emmys, the Grammys – everybody loves award shows with all the attendant and attendees’ glitz and glamour. Shouldn’t I get a piece of this? Probably not, but when have I ever let good decisions or good taste interfere with my plans? So this week I made up arbitrary categories and presented awards to performers who, unlike myself, have made a positive difference to my show. Introducing the “T.F.O. This week’s show was a tribute to the diva of decluttering, the dean of de-accession, the titan of tidying up – Marie Kondo. I played nothing but music that “sparks joy” for me and tossed in a few joyful requests from the audience. PLAYLIST FOR ” A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN” (1.12.19)

Turntable For One is all about problems – certainly not solving them, more like creating them, exacerbating them, and at the very least exploiting them. So this week I tackled the problem of the government shutdown. What did I do? I played music, of course, but I also dedicated the program to the 800,000 federal employees who have gone from figuring out how to live paycheck to paycheck to how to live no paycheck to no paycheck. The President said he didn’t want to call this a shutdown. I agree. How about travesty?

I’ll be off the air for July and August, pre-empted by live concerts from Tanglewood. So, once again, as a goodbye treat, I offered listeners music to listen to during the summer which we can discuss when I return in September (I expect complete essays with full bibliographies). Forget Frank; Tony can take a hike; Carmen isn’t coming; and Nina’s a no-show. In fact, I gave all American jazz singers the night off and played singers from around the world to celebrate (a couple days early) International Jazz Day. My special thanks to Carol Welsman (Canada), Sarah Lancman (France), Sinne Eeg (Denmark), Tom Rust (U.K.), and Susie Arioli (Canada) for recording greetings to the Turntable For One audience and introducing a song or performer they admire. Special thanks, also, to Delicatessen Jazz for letting me give the world premiere of a song from their new, soon-to-be-released CD.
