PLAYLIST FOR “DEBATE NIGHT” (10.1.16)

3 Oct

I started the show with an hour of songs about debates, candidates, and politics. What was I thinking? So half-way through, realizing people want to get away from the cacophony and chaos, I played an hour of music to steer attention away and calm the soul from all the madness.

PLAYLIST FOR “ELLA FITZGERALD CHALLENGES THE WORLD!” (9.24.16)

26 Sep

This week Ella Fitzgerald took on all comers in a head-to-head, well, really a voice-to-voice competition. She sang standards and some surprising duets; she even challenged Sarah Vaughan in a “forgetting the lyrics” competition (Sarah won) and challenged Shirley Horn to a “slow singing” competition (Shirley won). But it was impossible to listen to this show without marveling at Ella’s musicality and her warmth and without feeling fortunate that we had her for so long.

PLAYLIST FOR “SUMMER LISTENING ASSIGNMENTS – SEASON FINALE” (7.2.16)

I’m posting this a week late. Computer troubles. Saturday (July 2nd) was my final show of the season so, following tradition, I handed out summer listening assignments, music you should be listening to while Turntable For One is on its summer vacation. I’ll be off the air for 8 weeks, but from time to time I’ll let you know some of the music I’m listening to this summer. Leave a comment and let me know what’s keeping your ears busy, besides the general din of iniquity. I’ll be back on the air September 10th.

PLAYLIST FOR “CELEBRATING MOTHERS” (5.7.16)

9 May

A program for all the mothers in the audience, and for a change I meant it in a literal sense, not as a nasty pejorative. Dreams aren’t real and they don’t come true…of course, most of my plans don’t come true, either. You know, maybe there’s no difference at all. Both of them end in disappointment and heartache – but not when singers like the ones I played are singing about plans they’re making!
