PLAYLIST FOR “PROMISES, PROMISES” 6.21.25

22 Jun

When I started this show, 15 years ago, I promised no bad jokes. That promise went out the window on the first show. Then I promised I’d never play Rod Stewart or Lawrence Welk.  0 for 2 on those.  Finally, in desperation, I promised never to try to sell  skin care products to my audience. I’ve kept that promise…but of course, I do have one more show to go this season; and I do have 15 boxes of the stuff in my garage.  Hmmmm….  This week? I promised two hours all about promises others have made, and a few they didn’t keep.

PLAYLIST FOR “UNIMPEACHABLE LOVE SONGS” (2.13.21)

14 Feb

After doing about a dozen Valentine’s Day shows over the years, I needed something new for this year’s theme. Out of the blue this theme came to me. I don’t know why I thought of it. The show was a mix of love songs, plus a few Valentine gifts to myself and a number of song dedications from the audience. In the end, I believe I acquitted myself well. PLAYLIST FOR “LET’S GO CLUBBING” (AN ARCHIVE RE-BROADCAST) (10.17.20)

18 Oct

This is a re-broadcast of a show from last April, a simpler time when I couldn’t imagine that 8 months later things could be so much worse and heartache and loss could be so preponderant. This is how I introduced the playlist back then:

While everyone’s sheltering in place or self-quarantining, there are two ways to look at this week’s show featuring all live performances from jazz clubs and venues around the world: either I’m trying to make people feel bad because of all the night life we’re missing OR I’m trying to give people hope for what’s to come after this damned pandemic has run at least its first course. Which is it? You be the judge. I just had fun playing some of my favorite singers in front of a band, behind a microphone, in front of an audience.

PLAYLIST FOR “I GOT TWO WORDS FOR YOU” (9.7.19)

9 Sep

You know what drives me crazy? People who over-use already tired rhetorical cliches, such as “With all due respect” – which is always a lie. My least favorite: “I got two words for you…” I thought (hoped) if I used that phrase over and over and over for two hours and if every song I played had a two-word title, maybe – just maybe – people would think twice (or maybe even once) and not use that annoying expression. Did it work? I got three words for myself: “In your dreams.”
