PLAYLIST FOR “HALLOWEEN PARTY 2023” 10.28.23

It’s that time again. Time for ghost and goblins and ghouls; time for witches, curses, and the walking dead. And that means it’s time for my annual musical tribute to Congress. Whoops – wrong calendar! I mean it’s time for my annual Halloween Party. I play my favorite Halloween songs, and when trick or treaters come to the door, I get to guess who they’re dressed up to be, and then hand out an appropriate song. The final song of the show has absolutely nothing to do with Halloween, but I think it has absolutely everything to do with everything else.

PLAYLIST FOR “SPRING HAS SPRUNG 2023” (3.25.23)

What do these things have in common: a pogo stick, a diving board, a trampoline?  Three things I wouldn’t be caught dead on? True but not what I was thinking. The three worst golden anniversary gifts? Also true but I couldn’t get two hours of music out of that. Answer: they all have springs! And that’s what I celebrated with two hours of Spring songs, with a nod to Spring planting with Mark Jennett, Spring Fever with Gretje Angell, and Spring cleaning with Kevin Mahogany. Proving once again that Turntable For One comes in like a lamb and goes out like a lamb chop.

Usually I play 20-24 different singers, musicians, Mystery Vocalists each week. This week I challenged myself to play more. My goal was 57 different artists. Originally, my plan was play something by The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, say Good Night, and go home. But because the choir threatened to sue me if I even mentioned their name on my show – probably for elder abuse – I had to come up with a different solution.

One of my favorite shows of the year, not just because I get to play some favorite Halloween songs, but because when trick or treaters come to the door, I get to guess who they’re dressed up as. Of course, instead of handing out candy, I play a song that matches their costume. This year, somehow, a cat rang the doorbell, so I played a couple songs in honor of National Cat Day. By the way – and no surprise here – Holly Cole won the prize for the spookiest song. It may not be a Halloween song, but it’s fabulously scary, if you ask me.

PLAYLIST FOR “ANNIVERSARY” (1.8.22)

 2022 is just a week old, but it’s been an eventful week. We observed the one-year anniversary of one of the most disgraceful, unforgettable, unforgivable moments in American history. On a happier note – there are happier notes. WMNR Fine Arts Radio celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2022.  On a personal note, my wife and I celebrated our 52nd anniversary this week. Did we go to a fabulous restaurant?  No, not when omicron is on most menus as a main course. Did we go ice skating? (Something Megan has loved her entire life.) Let me just say that the only things more brittle than my ego are my bones. So we went dancing instead?  Did you hear what I just said about my bones?  Actually, no, that one’s more about my ego.  Which finally brings me to this week’s theme if anyone is still awake. I wanted to celebrate my anniversary and my wife with some of the music that brought us together, some of the music Megan and I discovered together, some of the music that has sustained us. In short: just when you thought this show couldn’t get more self-indulgent, I presented two hours of Music We Love on this Happy Anniversary edition of Turntable For One. PLAYLIST FOR “LIGHTBULB MOMENTS” (11.13.21)

They don’t happen often and they don’t happen to everyone. But if one does happen to you, it could change your life. Of course I’m talking about an IRS audit. Of course I’m not talking about an IRS audit. I’m talking about those out-of-the-blue, eye opening moments of inspiration or maybe self-discovery. One thing: they’re always moments of clarity. I don’t know what you call them: Serendipity? Intuition? Divine Intervention? Years and years of therapy? I called them something else this week. I called them Lightbulb Moments because that’s how I could get two-hours of music out of them – tossing in a few personal lightbulb moments that changed my own musical life.

It’s that time again, time when ghastly, ghostly white apparitions appear. The living dead, their eyes open but unseeing, their mouths moving but they say nothing. I know, I just described the U.S. Senate, but that’s not what the show was about this week. I served up a bobbing bucket full of great ghoulish songs at the annual Turntable for One Halloween party! And, best of all, I got to play my favorite game. When Trick Or Treaters came to the door, I got to guess who they were dressed up to be and give them an appropriate song.
