I usually give my email during the show and when I get email, it’s usually people asking questions. Some of the questions….well…”Dear Turntable For One – How Deep is The Ocean? In addition to playing songs about Stop, Look, & Listen, I spent much of the hour asking anyone who would listen to stop and look into their wallets – I mean into their hearts and make a donation to the WMNR Spring Fundraising Drive. It wasn’t all pleading and begging. After I played Billie Holiday’s blown Take 7 of Glad To Be Unhappy, I  gave the audience the opportunity to make a couple of donations if they wanted to hear the completed version. A rewarding time was had by all – especially the radio station.

PLAYLIST FOR “TOWN & COUNTRY” (2.6.21)

Remember the story we were taught when we were little? It was the story of the country mouse, cautious and practical, and the city mouse, worldly and sophisticated. I know my teachers were trying to teach us to be like the common sense country mouse. And I was never able to convince them that the two mice would be indistinguishable when caught in a sticky trap. And so the debate about which is better – living in the country or living in the city – has gone on and on and on. And it went on during my show, too. Did I throw light on this debate or just throw shade? Did I answer the questions or question the answers? Really? You gotta be kidding. I just tried to fill two hours with songs about the city and songs about the country. Plus a shout-out to the Super Bowl cities. (I let Gloria Estefan represent Florida because I can’t think of a single song about FL or any of its cities I want to hear.)

Seems to me the world needs some sweetness even more than when I first did this show last June. Guaranteed “sweet” songs with no sugary aftertaste. Here’s how I introduced the show last summer. 

Sweet – it’s a word that you don’t hear much, especially now. Home Sweet Home? After three months of sheltering in place, what’s so sweet about being home? Sweet Dreams? Its been months since I had one. Sweet Spot? I know what it used to mean, but now it means keeping six feet away from people. Sweet Nothings? That’s still how most people describe the long, rambling opens to my shows (just like this). So I thought it was time to give Sweet a little love. It was only for two hours – then everyone could go back to life as we know it these days.

PLAYLIST FOR “MEMORY PROBLEMS” (9.29.20)

In the past I’ve done shows on “whistling” and “dancing.” Why did I choose those themes? Because those are two things I’ve never been able to do. In my life! I also can’t roll my tongue but, come on – if you can get two hours of songs out of that theme, you should be doing my show. In picking themes, I gotta go with what I know. So Memory Problems, songs about remembering and forgetting, was an obvious choice. I finished the show with a poem/prayer sung in Hebrew by Sophie Milman. I couldn’t let RBG’s passing go without some kind of celebration.

Sweet – it’s a word that you don’t hear much, especially now. Home Sweet Home? After three months of sheltering in place, what’s so sweet about being home? Sweet Dreams? Its been months since I had one. Sweet Spot? I know what it used to mean, but now it means keeping six feet away from people. Sweet Nothings? That’s still how most people describe the long, rambling opens to my shows (just like this). So I thought it was time to give Sweet a little love. It was only for two hours – then everyone could go back to life as we know it these days.

Anybody else having bad dreams these nights? So, I’ve not been getting much sleep, but I did get a theme for this week’s show – songs about dreams and a few songs about things to dream about. Also I gave a special shout-out to Georgia for opening up its beauty salons, bowling alleys, restaurants, and tattoo parlors.
