PLAYLIST FOR “NEVER SAY NEVER” (AN ARCHIVE RE-BROADCAST) 2.21.26

22 Feb

Couldn’t do a live show Saturday night, so I dusted off a show from a simpler time – 2017. Here’s what I wrote about it back then:

If there’s a rule about an exception to every rule, doesn’t that mean there must be a rule with no exception? Think about that as you look down the list of singers and songs helping me to break one of the tiresome rules I’ve heard my whole life – Never Say Never! Really? You try singing these songs without singing that word.

PLAYLIST FOR “LOADS OF LOVE FOR VALENTINE’S DAY!” 2.14.26

15 Feb

Loads of love songs for Valentine’s Day. In the past I’ve always dropped in a ton of ironic songs about love that are hardly love songs. One year, to be ironic, I even played Love For Sale. This year, this month, this week, I didn’t think the world needed my irony – or maybe I didn’t need it right now. PLAYLIST FOR “TERMS OF ENDEARMENT” (AN ARCHIVE RE-BROADCAST 1.31.26

Still under the weather and will have to defer the “Game Night” show until next Saturday night. So we heard a show from the archive on Saturday. This is what I said about the show at the time…

Dear, Honey, Baby, Sweetie, Darling, Doll –  no, I’m not quoting from my listeners’ emails. We’re about to enter into another “spin” cycle, a year when anger, accusations, and name calling fill the air and the airwaves. PLAYLIST FOR “PLAYING NICE” 11.15.25

16 Nov

It started when we were kids, I mean little kids. Our teachers would tell us. Our parents would tell us. Our aunts and uncles, cousins, and sometime even the mail carrier would tell us: Play Nice! (Of course my parents also told me not to lock my little sister in the trunk of our Chevy Impala – but that’s for another show). Playing Nice – it’s a phrase, an admonition, and a concept that’s kind of gone out of fashion these days.  But not while I have this microphone, because for two hours, I just played nice – nice songs by singers and musicians who know how to play nice.

About 5 years ago, I did a show called, “I Ain’t Got Nothin’ But The Blues.”  Back then, the country – and the  world – were reeling under a pandemic. Americans were confused, fearful, and angry, emotions reflected in contentious politics. We didn’t  know which way the country was going to go. PLAYLIST FOR “SONGS ABOUT SONGS” AN ARCHIVE REBROADCAST 9.20.25

21 Sep

I reached back into the Turntable For One archives and dusted off golden oldie and one of my favorites from the past few years. This is what I wrote when the show was new:

In the middle of planning this week’s show – A Musical Tribute To The  Venn Diagram – I was forced to face a defining question: What makes Turntable For One Turntable For One? Forget the technical mistakes. Forget the historical inaccuracies. Forget the defamation law suits (And God knows I’ve tried). The essence week after week: Songs! Can’t I get a theme out of that?

PLAYLIST FOR “FAMOUS ADDRESSES” 6.7.25

9 Jun

For some reason I seem to be in “get out of Dodge mode” these days. Can’t imagine why. So I played a couple hours of songs about famous addresses, songs with lyrics about famous addresses, and songs recorded at famous addresses.  I especially liked playing Steven Pasquale singing the new national anthem of ICE – On The Street Where You Live. All in all, I think I addressed the topic pretty well.
