PLAYLIST FOR “FOUL PLAY” (6.15.24)

What can you do when you’re in a foul mood except play songs about foul play, and foul weather, andfowl weather, and on and on in that foul trajectory? Plus as an early Father’s Day gift, my wife and son joined me in the studio to talk about Cody’s music and to play the game he and I have played for years: count the number of quotes in a Dexter Gordon solo. Final show of the season, but I did not go gentle into that good night. I went down swinging. For the first hour I handed out summer listening assignments, music my audience should be listening to while my show is on hiatus. Of course, I included my annual segment of ice cream treats from my ice cream truck, my summer job. Things like the “Rainbow Sherbet Pride Parfait” (Not available in Florida), the “Unsinkable Titan Treat,”the “Mar-A-Lago Milkshake,” and the “Disney Delight” (also not available in Florida). The second hour could be subtitled, “The Long Goodbye.”

Usually I play 20-24 different singers, musicians, Mystery Vocalists each week. This week I challenged myself to play more. My goal was 57 different artists. Originally, my plan was play something by The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, say Good Night, and go home. But because the choir threatened to sue me if I even mentioned their name on my show – probably for elder abuse – I had to come up with a different solution.

All my life people have been telling me, You’re so negative? Why don’t you try to be more positive. Well, for the past month I have been positive – and I’ve been miserable!  Because I have been testing positive on one damned Covid test after another. Those tests have been the most depressing tests I’ve taken since the Myers-Briggs Personality test. But, finally, after a month, I was back, testing negative – and that’s good, right?  But that’s not the way things are supposed to be. Being Negative – that’s not good.  It’s bad. Being positive?  That’s good.  I’m very confused. So I brought a bunch of songs to see which ones Test Positive – in a good way ! -and it was good to be back at my Turntable For One.

It could have been worse.  Election Day Tuesday was supposed to be worse.  So bad I thought I might have to head for a desert island. I even packed a suitcase and told the radio station I was changing the name of the show to Palm Tree For One. But it didn’t turn out as catastrophically as I feared. Couldn’t do a live show this week, so I led my audience on a trip down memory lane…which, admittedly, is becoming a shorter and shorter trip for me. Here’s what I wrote when the show was first broadcast. 

He gave us so much wonderful, unforgettable music. Wait, you’re thinking of that Frank? I was thinking of Frank Loesser and I tried to squeeze as many gems in his voluminous songbook from movies, Broadway, and popular song into a couple hours as I could. But before the Evening With Frank began, I opened the show again with another song from a young Ukrainian jazz singer who remains (as of this posting) safe and even hopeful in Kyiv.

I usually give my email during the show and when I get email, it’s usually people asking questions. Some of the questions….well…”Dear Turntable For One – How Deep is The Ocean?
