Why did I wear a sweater to the show this week? No buttons to struggle with? (I thought we were friends.) PLAYLIST FOR “IF” (11.4.23)

7 Nov

It’s a small word, only two letters. But it’s aspirational, inspirational, and conditional, opening a thought or a wish to thousand possibilities.  So in another (likely futile) attempt to Make Grammar Great Again, I presented a musical tribute to the conditional  conjunction – IF.

PLAYLIST FOR “QUIZ: WHO WROTE THAT – THE GENDER REVEAL EDITION”” (1.14.23)

16 Jan

Who wrote these songs? A man or a woman? Don’t think of this as a test. Think of it as a provocative little quiz. Sure, there are right and wrong answers. Plus, how you answer does reflect how much you know about music; and what unconscious biases you have; and whether you’re a decent human being or a total disgrace. But it wasn’t a test. It also was some of my favorite music.

PLAYLIST FOR “MORE THAN 3 TENORS” (3.19.22)

21 Mar

They were superstars on their own, iconic names who didn’t need first names: Carreras, Domingo, Pavarotti. The world loved them; and they loved the world – sometimes a little too literary. When they agreed to sing together, they went from superstars to superheroes: The Three Tenors. Three? Really? That’s all it takes to be adored? I can do better – much better than that! Let the adoration flow because I presented More Than Three Tenors” this week. Of course, I meant, tenor sax players and accompanists plus a few favorite tenor voices as well.

PLAYLIST FOR “BROTHER FROM ANOTHER MOTHER…KINDA…SORTA” (5.15.21)

Can two things be different and the same? I mean, they’re different but really they’re the same. What about Drake Devil Dogs & Hostess Susie-Qs? Or Ring Dings and Ding Dongs? Or Yodels and Ho-Hos? Probably shouldn’t be writing this when I’m so hungry. And does this applies to music? Can two songs, two different songs really be the same song, like twins? Look over this week’s playlist and decide for yourself.

PLAYLIST FOR “11TH ANNUAL MUSIC TO BE THANKFUL FOR” (11.28.20)

29 Nov

Definitely one of my favorite shows every year because it gives me a chance to highlight music I’m thankful for and invite other WMNR broadcasters (B) and some of my favorite singers (S) to talk about and introduce music that’s important to them. Plus, because this show always falls near my birthday, it’s also “family night” at Turntable For One. So my wife and son join me at the radio station to offer their banter and musical selections. This year was different. My wife, Megan, was in the studio with me; our son, Cody, whom we saw at Thanksgiving via FaceTime (just like so many families this year), reported in from the safety of his NYC apartment. Stay well. Stay safe. Everyone.

PLAYLIST FOR “SUCKERS AND LOSERS” (9.12.20)

13 Sep

I don’t know why I thought of this theme. Must be something in the air. So I played some of my favorite sucker/loser songs; and after half an hour, I told the audience that I’d been suckering them into thinking I was just doing another one of those ironic themes. I dedicated the rest of the show to musicians, singers, composers, and lyricist  who are/were definitely non-suckers and non-losers. Not only have they served to create, expand, and embolden the world of jazz, but also they served this country in its military forces. (I also took a moment or two to grieve the passing of Gary Peacock.)
