Well, they didn’t change the locks at the radio station, so I was back live to start a new season. Was I any less self-involved? Do you mean, did I learn anything over my summer vacation? It could have been worse.  Election Day Tuesday was supposed to be worse.  So bad I thought I might have to head for a desert island. I even packed a suitcase and told the radio station I was changing the name of the show to Palm Tree For One. But it didn’t turn out as catastrophically as I feared. Couldn’t do a live show this week, so I decided to take a stroll down memory lane, a shorter and shorter trip for me. Look what I found! A show from last Spring. Here’s what I wrote about the show at the time…

Until recently my exercise regimen consisted of Running my mouth, Stretching the truth; Rushing to judgment; and Leaping to all the wrong conclusions. Those days are gone. Now I have a Life Coach telling me when to sleep, when to wake up, when to stand, and how far to walk and on and on. And there’s no way I can tell this Life Coach to put a cork in it because my Life Coach isn’t a person – it’s an Apple Watch that’s become the boss of me. So if I have to endure this torture, of course, my audience had to endure the torture with two-hours of songs about exercise. I’d write more but my damned watch is telling me it’s time to stand!

One of my favorite shows of the year, not just because I get to play some favorite Halloween songs, but because when trick or treaters come to the door, I get to guess who they’re dressed up as. Of course, instead of handing out candy, I play a song that matches their costume. This year, somehow, a cat rang the doorbell, so I played a couple songs in honor of National Cat Day. By the way – and no surprise here – Holly Cole won the prize for the spookiest song. It may not be a Halloween song, but it’s fabulously scary, if you ask me.

PLAYLIST FOR “AN EXERCISE IN EXERCISING” (6.25.22)

Until recently my exercise regimen consisted of Running my mouth, Stretching the truth; Rushing to judgment; and Leaping to all the wrong conclusions. Those days are gone. Now I have a Life Coach telling me when to sleep, when to wake up, when to stand, and how far to walk and on and on. And there’s no way I can tell this Life Coach to put a cork in it because my Life Coach isn’t a person – it’s an Apple Watch that’s become the boss of me. So if I have to endure this torture, of course, my audience had to endure the torture with two-hours of songs about exercise. I’d write more but my damned watch is telling me it’s time to stand!

Double threats. Maybe even triple threats. And no, I’m not talking about my fan mail. I’m talking about people – well, take Hugh Jackman, for example. He acts, he also sings, he can dance, and he can tear your throat out with his Wolverine claws. This week was dedicated to those people blessed with more than one enviable talent. Some of the singers this week write songs or came from other professions. Plus some of the songs come from unexpected sources – Dorothy Parker, Kazuo Ishiguro, even Fred Astaire. Gotta say I am in awe of these multi-talented people, especially since I had to give up chewing gum a few years back.
