PLAYLIST FOR “PLAYING NICE” 11.15.25

16 Nov

It started when we were kids, I mean little kids. Our teachers would tell us. Our parents would tell us. Our aunts and uncles, cousins, and sometime even the mail carrier would tell us: Play Nice! (Of course my parents also told me not to lock my little sister in the trunk of our Chevy Impala – but that’s for another show). Playing Nice – it’s a phrase, an admonition, and a concept that’s kind of gone out of fashion these days.  But not while I have this microphone, because for two hours, I just played nice – nice songs by singers and musicians who know how to play nice.

PLAYLIST FOR “TURN UP THE QUIET” 5.4.24

5 May

Here are a few recent fan emails.

Dear Turntable For One. Will you keep it down? I’m trying to sleep. (That guy is a regular.)

Dear Turntable For One – Help. I forget how to turn off my radio. Signed, Desperate on Saturday Night.  (I wasn’t able to help her.)

Dear H. William Stine. I keep asking Alexa to play quietly and she keeps saying she doesn’t know that one.

Sense a pattern here? I did. If it’s quiet they want, it’s quiet they got this week.

PLAYLIST FOR “SOCIAL DISTANCING” (3.21.20)

22 Mar

At times like these – perilous times, uncertain times – people turn to Turntable For One for information and advice. Clearly these are people who’ve never listened to the show before. But, okay, I can totally pretend to abandon my usual format and inveterate cynicism to talk about something serious. Social Distancing. What is it? How do I do it? And what can I do while I’m doing it? I think these songs demonstrate some of the actions and attitudes people should adopt to fill the long months ahead. I also threw in Stacey Kent and Rachael & Vilray to remind people of what we won’t be able to do, perhaps for a long, long time. A little salt never really hurts a wound, does it?

PLAYLIST FOR “JAZZ JUKEBOX” (11.17.18)

19 Nov

Saturday afternoon, I sat in for Garrett Stack on his program American Jukebox, rock and pop hits of the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s.  So I thought I’d spend Saturday evening on my show playing jazz versions of pop tunes.
